The Center for Southeast Asian Studies (CSEAS) at Kyoto University has announced the opening of applications for the prestigious 2026 Visiting Research Scholars Fellowship. About the Fellowship
CSEAS provides around 14 fellowship opportunities annually for qualified researchers who wish to explore topics associated with Southeast Asia. Successful candidates will become part of the dynamic academic community in Kyoto and collaborate closely with a network of researchers involved in regional studies. The fellowship duration generally spans three to six months, offering six flexible start dates in 2026: May, June, July, August, September, and November. Although candidates can suggest a desired start date, the ultimate timetable will be determined according to availability.
The initiative is an element of a larger endeavour by CSEAS to promote creative research, enhance international academic collaboration, and improve comprehension of Southeast Asian communities. Fellows should engage actively in center activities and add to CSEAS publications, including the Southeast Asian Studies journal and the Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia.
Eligibility Requirements
The fellowship is available to senior scholars below the age of 65 who possess a robust research history. Researchers above this age who are exceptional may also be considered. Applicants must not be registered in a graduate or postdoctoral program when applying. An alternative path is open for skilled librarians who want to enhance the center’s collections and networks.
Individuals who have previously been awarded the CSEAS fellowship must wait a minimum of six years following the end of their last term before submitting a new application.
What the Fellowship Provides
The fellowship offers a stipend for international travel, living expenses in Kyoto, research costs, and domestic travel throughout Japan. Fellows must to live in Kyoto throughout the fellowship and must deliver a public lecture while they are there.
Furthermore, during their fellowship, fellows are regarded as employees of Kyoto University and are required to adhere to institutional policies and procedures.

- A curriculum vitae (up to 5 pages), featuring a list of significant publications
- A research proposal (around 2 double-spaced pages) utilizing the specified template.
- Two recommendation letters submitted directly by referees on official letterhead.
