HISTORY OF THE HONJO FOUNDATION

The Honjo International Scholarship Foundation received approval from the Minister of Education as an incorporated scholarship foundation on December 25, 1996. The establishment was funded by the late Mr. Masanori Honjo, founder of Itoen, Ltd., who contributed personal assets totaling two hundred million in cash and one million shares of his company as the Foundation’s initial capital, along with an additional one hundred million in cash for operational expenses. The authorities approved the Foundation as a Specified Corporation in the Public Interest in March 1998.

Mr. Masanori Honjo died in July 2002, after which Mrs. Teruko Honjo, fulfilling her husband’s wishes, was chosen president of the Foundation and contributed ¥1.6 million in Itoen, Ltd. stocks as the Foundation’s first capital. Mr. Hachiro Honjo, CEO of Itoen, Ltd., presently serves as the chairman of the Foundation.

The Foundation concentrates on exceptional students with the potential to emerge as prominent leaders in developing nations, offering scholarships in the aspiration that these nations will progress peacefully.

Its primary objective is to offer financial assistance to exceptional students, irrespective of their academic discipline, to facilitate the attainment of their desired degree in the most expedient manner by alleviating the necessity of part-time employment. Advantages

Scholarship Amount:

¥230,000 monthly for 1-2 year degree programs
¥210,000 monthly for three-year degree programs
¥180,000 monthly for 4-5 year degree programs

Qualified Nationalities

This grant is available to international students of all nations.

Criteria for Eligibility

Applicants must satisfy all of the following conditions to qualify for this scholarship:

Non-Japanese Nationality:

The candidate must not possess Japanese citizenship.
The applicant must be enrolled in or applying to a Japanese graduate school commencing in January 2025.

Enrollment in Professional Graduate School (with Exception):

Applicants in professional graduate programs are typically ineligible, except for those who can provide a research plan.

Minimum Enrollment Period:

The duration of enrollment till graduation must exceed 12 months.

Age Restriction:

Applicants for the PhD program must be under 35 years of age at the commencement of the course, while those applying for the master’s degree must be under 30 at the onset of the course.

Prospective Career Aspirations:

The applicant must possess a profound commitment to serve their homeland.

Global Amity and Benevolence:

The applicant must recognize the significance of international camaraderie, engage in foundation activities, and be prepared to join the alumni network.

Proficiency in the Japanese Language:

The candidate must possess the ability to engage in a fundamental conversation in Japanese. Interviews will be administered in Japanese.

Application and Evaluation Timeline:

September 2 – October 31, 2024: Period for applications
Announcement of document screening results on January 31, 2025
February 2025: Interviews (conducted in Tokyo or through video conferencing)
March 31, 2025: Announcement of final results
