History of Osaka University

Osaka University and Osaka University of Foreign Studies merged on October 1, 2007. Osaka University of Foreign Studies, founded as Osaka School of Foreign Languages in 1921 in Uehonmachi, Osaka, has evolved significantly into a premier institution for foreign language education and research in western Japan. It yielded exceptional alumni, including SHIBA Ryotaro. The institution was initially established through a contribution of one million yen from HAYASHI Choko, a businesswoman from Osaka.

She contributed the funds to the national government, asserting that Osaka required the establishment of a school to cultivate globally-minded individuals. The two universities comprising the current Osaka University were established via the endeavors of private persons in Osaka. The amalgamation of these two universities resulted in the present Osaka University, a prominent national university in Japan, with three campuses in the Hokusetsu area of Kansai.

Osaka University, embodying its inherited ethos, has built distinctive undergraduate schools, graduate schools, and research centers. Osaka University currently comprises four campuses: Suita, Toyonaka, Minoh, and Nakanoshima. Additionally, the institution comprises 11 undergraduate schools, 15 graduate schools, and 23 research centers and institutes. It is a distinguished comprehensive university in Japan.

Physics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and Data Science

The Graduate School of Engineering Science is advancing diverse research and educational initiatives encompassing physics, mechanical science, chemistry, and data science. This program invites exceptional international students who have studied mechanical science, bioengineering, computer science, biological sciences, medicine, and/or allied health sciences globally.

  • In accordance with the Graduate School’s educational philosophy, which posits that “the fundamental development of scientific technology through the integration of science and technology will foster a genuine culture of humanity,” we shall cultivate human resources, specifically,
