Overview of the Industrial Italian PhD Program

The aim of the PhD program is to cultivate highly skilled experts with robust interdisciplinary education in areas such as digital innovation, sustainable development, energy transition, social welfare, and others. Learners will immerse themselves in one of the subsequent thematic areas:

Process Innovation

  • Information, Economics, Ethics & Policy: For data scientists, AI experts, and policy makers.
  • Environmental & Energy Transformation: For specialists in renewable energy, circular economy, and sustainable urban development.

Product Innovation

  • For physicists and engineers focused on thermonuclear fusion, materials science, and advanced computing.

Social Innovation 

  • For social researchers, legal practitioners, and urban planning specialists concentrating on inclusivity, accountability, and organizational creativity.

Welfare Innovation 

  • For graduates in biomedical and social sciences concentrating on digital health, medical advancements, and the sustainability of welfare systems.

Eligibility Requirements

Individuals of any nationality can apply if they possess:

  • A master’s degree/postgraduate qualification,
  • An Italian degree from before 1999 (previous system)
  • A master’s degree obtained from the AFAM sector, or
  • An equivalent degree from abroad (to be assessed by the Selection Board).
  • Students who are about to graduate can also apply, as long as they finish their degree by October 31, 2025.

  • Yearly Allowance: €16,243 (tax-exempt)
  • +50% rise for international research stays (up to 12–18 months)
  • Additional funding for research expenses in Italy or internationally (10% of the yearly stipend)

Application Deadlines: The application procedure for the Industrial PhD Scholarship 2025 at the University of Milano-Bicocca is split into two phases. The initial session occurs from March 21 to April 24, 2025, whereas the subsequent session is available from July 11 to July 24, 2025, with both closing deadlines set for noon (Italian time). The PhD program is set to commence on November 1, 2025.
