Study in Germany: Germany KWI International Fellowships 2027
Applications are now open for the 2027 International Fellowships at the Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen. This six-month research programme provides early-career postdoctoral academics in the humanities, cultural studies, and social sciences with an exceptional chance to develop their work in a lively academic environment. KWI will host the selected researchers from April 1 to September 30, 2027, providing substantial support for their projects.
Applications are open to researchers anywhere around the world, provided they match the career-stage criteria. Successful candidates will receive an allowance of € 3,000 per month before tax, partial reimbursement of travel expenses, office space, and institutional support.
Germany KWI International Fellowships Research Fields
Your proposal should be in the humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences and connected to KWI’s current research focus.

- Constellations of historical impact
- Dialogues between cultural and social sciences
Applicants can propose completing a book or special issue, complete a research proposal, set up a research group, or build partnerships with Ruhr Alliance universities.
Eligibility Requirements for Germany KWI International Fellowships
- Individual applications only (not groups or teams)
- Very good mastery of English
- Open for the entire six-month period
- Physical presence at KWI for a minimum of 3 days each week
- Researchers of all nationalities may apply.
German citizens are only eligible if they are currently working at an international institution. Your cover letter can explain career breaks, such as those arising from caring responsibilities or periods as a scholar at risk, and these will be taken into account when assessing your eligibility.

Fellows are expected to take part in the KWI Colloquium, lectures, conferences, and reading groups. They must write for the KWI Blog, complete entry and exit interviews, and give credit to KWI in any publications that come from the fellowship. No teaching requirement, and you can concentrate fully on your study.
