The Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf is affiliated with the Helmholtz Association of German Research Centres, dedicated to acquiring new knowledge to enhance and sustain our quality of life. Energy Research

If you wish to apply for the summer student program, please ensure that you meet the following criteria:

• You are a university student pursuing natural sciences (physical or life sciences), engineering, or a similar discipline.
• A valid university enrollment is required for the entire duration of the program from July to September 2025.
• Completion of a minimum of three years of university study is required before the forthcoming summer, along with a bachelor’s degree or official confirmation.
• Academic performance can be demonstrated through your grades and a letter of recommendation from a professor or researcher at your university who is familiar with your work and qualified to assess it.
• You possess a proficient understanding of the English language to engage in all program activities.
• Applicants who possess a master’s degree and are not enrolled in a different course, along with PhD students, are ineligible for the program.
• Students who held a contract or stipend at HZDR one year prior to July 1 of the designated year are ineligible for the summer student program.
• If you are not enrolled in a university (e.g., you possess a bachelor’s degree and are merely preparing to pursue a master’s program), you are ineligible for the summer student program.

What is the procedure for applying to the HZDR Summer Student Program 2025?

1. Your Curriculum Vitae

Provide the necessary information regarding yourself.

Inform us,

• If you will be enrolled as a university student during the HZDR summer student program from July to September 2025 (compulsory),
• if you will have finished a minimum of three years of your university education before July 1, 2025 (required),
• Lastly, if you will obtain your Bachelor’s degree by July 1, 2025,
• Your latest semester grade in the 0-4 grade point average (GPA) system.

To facilitate calculation, divide your local semester grade (e.g., “8”) by the maximum grade available (e.g., “10”) and multiply the outcome by 4 (e.g., “3.2”). In the German grading system, “1” corresponds to “4” on the GPA scale, while “4” corresponds to “1”. A German semester grade of 1.7 corresponds to a GPA of 3.3. If you are a first-semester master’s student, please submit your bachelor’s degree grade. These grade values serve solely as a guideline for assessment. Please be advised that we will verify all submitted grades.

Please provide the commencement year of your current university studies, the topic of study, the name and address of the university, and the name of the recommending group leader or professor. A referral letter from this individual is mandatory.

2. Duration

Indicate your availability timeframe. Your anticipated duration of stay should be no less than 6 weeks and no more than 9 weeks. Your attendance during the lecture session from calendar weeks 31 to 35 is mandatory (core time). We will not provide any exceptions.

3. Selection of subject matter

Prioritize the offered research fields in accordance with your preferences. Excluding fields is permissible; however, be cognizant that an increased number of exclusions diminishes your likelihood of acceptance.

4. Type of work

Choose the type of work you would wish to engage in, encompassing both experimental and theoretical aspects, typically involving programming.

5. Elucidation of your research interest (optional)

Please complete this field only if you possess specific research interests. We cannot assure that you will be employed in the field.

6. Travel expenditures

Affirm that you will personally bear the costs of your trip to and from Dresden.
