Study in  China | Yunnan Normal University Language Teachers Scholarships 2026

China’s Center for Language Education and Cooperation has officially opened applications for the 2026 International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship. Yunnan Normal University has confirmed fifty dedicated places for international students beginning this autumn. The announcement signals the continuation of one of the most comprehensive state-funded programmes designed to train Chinese language educators worldwide. Applications are now live for the September 2026 intake.

Why This Scholarship Matters

The demand for Mandarin instruction in schools and universities continues to grow rapidly from Nairobi to São Paulo. Yet the pipeline of qualified teachers has not kept pace. CLEC uses this scholarship as the primary mechanism for closing that gap. With global student mobility still recalibrating after years of disruption and rising tuition costs pushing many capable students away from self-funded study, a programme that covers tuition, housing, insurance, and a monthly stipend carries particular weight in 2026.

For students in developing nations, where access to quality teacher-training programmes often requires international travel, this award removes nearly every financial barrier to a Chinese university education.

The Full Financial Package

Recipients receive a comprehensive package designed to support them throughout their studies:

  • Full Tuition Waiver: You pay nothing for your chosen programme.
  • Free On-Campus Accommodation: The scholarship covers housing at Yunnan Normal University.
  • Comprehensive Medical Insurance: You receive coverage under China’s standard plan for international students.
  • Monthly Living Allowance: Bachelor’s students and those in one-academic-year or one-semester programmes receive CNY 2,500 per month. Master’s students receive CNY 3,000 per month. Doctoral students receive CNY 3,500 per month.

Kunming’s cost of living runs significantly lower than Beijing or Shanghai, stretching the allowance considerably further. The package rivals the Chinese Government Scholarship for language-focused fields, though it targets students committed to careers in Chinese language education. Note that no separate travel grant exists, so budget your international airfare accordingly.

Eligibility: Who Can Apply

The scholarship welcomes non-Chinese citizens who meet the following criteria:

  • Age: You must be between 16 and 35 as of 1 September 2026. In-service Chinese language teachers may apply up to age 45. Bachelor’s applicants should generally be no older than 25.
  • Health and Character: You must be in good physical and mental health with a clean criminal record.
  • Language Proficiency: You must hold valid HSK and HSKK scores obtained within the preceding two years. These serve as the primary academic filter.
  • Career Intent: You must demonstrate genuine interest in pursuing a career in Chinese language education or a closely related field.
  • Previous Awards: Applicants who have received a comparable Chinese government scholarship within the past three years are generally ineligible for one-semester or one-year programmes.
  • Additional Requirements: Doctoral applicants need two reference letters from associate professors and a personal statement with a 3,000-character research proposal. Master’s applicants similarly need two professor-level references.

How to Apply

This programme requires a parallel application through two separate systems. Many first-time applicants miss this crucial detail.

  • Step 1: Register on the CLEC’s International Chinese Language Teachers Scholarship portal at chinese.cn.
  • Step 2: Simultaneously register on Yunnan Normal University’s International Student Management System.
  • Step 3: On the CLEC portal, select a recommending institution such as a local Confucius Institute or affiliated university. Designate Yunnan Normal University as your host institution.
  • Step 4: Your recommending body reviews and forwards your application. Yunnan Normal University then evaluates admission qualifications and sends its recommendations to CLEC for final adjudication.
  • Step 5: The central committee conducts a competitive assessment weighted heavily on HSK and HSKK scores, country of origin, and overall merit.
