The University of British Columbia (UBC) allocates more than $30 million per year to provide awards, scholarships, and other forms of financial assistance to undergraduate international students. This is done as a way of recognizing the academic success of exceptional students from all over the world.

Campuses of UBC

The two primary campuses of UBC are located in the Okanagan Valley, in Kelowna and Vancouver.

With more than 80 training locations around British Columbia, UBC offers clinical education to students in the Faculty of Medicine. In addition, the University of British Columbia (UBC) Robson Square, the UBC Learning Exchange, and the UBC Center for Digital Media are all located in Vancouver.

The two regional bases of UBC, located in India and Hong Kong, foster local ties and strengthen collaborations in the areas of learning, research, and capacity building.

General Eligibility Criteria:

The places you attended high school, the UBC campus you intend to attend, and the degree you are applying for all affect the requirements for admission. You will need to meet additional requirements if you are a mature student or if you have completed some post-secondary schooling.

Students in Canadian high schools

Transfer students to universities and colleges

Students in Advanced Placement

Your grades may be merged with an authorized high school curriculum if you complete AP courses to satisfy the UBC entry requirements.

Students pursuing their Baccalaureate abroad

You have different prerequisites for general admissions and degree-specific coursework if you are working toward the International Baccalaureate diploma.

Mature Students

You can be qualified as a mature student if you have not attended formal schooling for at least four years and can show that you have a strong potential for academic success through extracurricular activities and accomplishments.

Proficiency in English

At UBC, English is the main language of instruction. You have to show that you speak English, at least at a minimal level, to be admitted. This criterion can be fulfilled in nine different ways. For those who haven’t yet, academic English development programs are available.

University of British Scholarships Coverage

Scholarship for International Major Entrance

Outstanding international students enrolled in UBC’s undergraduate programs are allowed to apply for International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES). When a student enrolls at UBC for the first time, they receive their IMES, which they can keep for up to three more years of study. Depending on the amount of money available, different scholarships are given out each year in different amounts.

Acceptability

To qualify for the IMES, you need to:

  • Be a fresh student at UBC, having come straight out of high school.
  • Have an international student visa and be enrolled at UBC with a Canadian study permit. (Any modifications to your citizenship status will impact your eligibility for IMES.)
  • Exhibit outstanding extracurricular and community activity, as well as intellectual promise and academic accomplishment.
  • Not getting a nomination for an International Scholars Grant is determined by merit and need.

Best International Student Honors

A one-time merit-based entrance scholarship known as the Outstanding International Student (OIS) Award is given to deserving applicants upon receiving an admissions offer from UBC. Pupils that are chosen for this honor exhibit both academic strength and extracurricular activity.

Acceptability

To be given an OIS Award, you had to:

  • Be a new student at UBC, having come straight out of high school or a post-secondary institution (college or university).
  • Have a Canadian study permit (student visa) and be an international student attending UBC. (Any modifications to your citizenship status will impact your eligibility for scholarships.)
  • Exhibit exceptional academic success and robust involvement in extracurricular activities.
