Undergraduate scholarships, fully or partially funded, are available for students to study at one of Canada’s top universities.
The International Scholars Program at the University of British Columbia (UBC) offers prestigious need- and merit-based awards to outstanding international students pursuing an undergraduate degree in Canada.
The scholarship programme aims to support brilliant overseas students who can demonstrate strong academic success, leadership potential, financial need, and a desire to achieve positive change.
The scholarship award is based on the student’s indicated financial need. UBC takes into account tuition, fees, and living costs and subtracts what the student and their family can provide each year to determine financial need.

Requirements for the University of British Columbia International Scholars Program
Be an International Student
- Interested applicants must be international students wishing to study in Canada.
- Enter UBC from a recognised secondary school or transfer from a recognised institution.
Applicants should:
- Come directly to UBC from a recognised secondary school, or transfer from their first year at a post-secondary college or another university.
Meet the High School Graduation Requirement
- To be eligible, applicants must have graduated from high school in June or later of the second year before the academic year for which they are applying.
Be Applying for a First Undergraduate Degree
- Applicants should be enrolled in their first undergraduate degree programme.
Enhance Academic Performance
- UBC defines superior academic accomplishment as achieving all As or an equivalent level of academic achievement.
Demonstrate Significant Financial Need
- Applicants must show that they have a sufficient financial need such that they would not otherwise be able to pursue a UBC degree.

Requirements for the Vantage One Excellence Award
- Students must meet the standard qualifying requirements to be considered for the Vantage One Excellence Award, with some exceptions.
Applicants should:
- Meet other criteria for qualifying for the International Scholars Program.
- Applicants must still meet UBC’s English Language Admission Standard for direct admission.
- Meet UBC Vantage College admission requirements.
- Meet the English language requirements for Vantage College.
- Coming straight out of high school.
- Start your undergraduate degree through the UBC Vantage One Program.
Types of University of British Columbia International Scholars Program
1. Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award
The Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award acknowledges excellent prospective international undergraduates who have demonstrated high academic success and strong leadership skills.
2. International Student Award (Donald A. Wehrung)
The Donald A. Wehrung Foreign Student Award is given to excellent foreign undergraduates from developing or war-torn regions.
The award celebrates students who have achieved academic success regardless of adversity and who would not otherwise be able to attend university without significant financial support.
3. The International Impact Award
The International Impact Award honours outstanding students who have demonstrated leadership and commitment to addressing critical global and societal concerns.
This scholarship may appeal to applicants who wish to use their education to address a major environmental or social problem.
4. Vantage One Award for Excellence
The scholarship gives international students with good academic credentials the option to start their undergraduate education through the UBC Vantage One Program while completing academic and English-language requirements.

Financial Assistance Based on Need

UBC calculates financial need by assessing the entire projected cost of;

Potential Multi-Year Support
- The scholarship award may be extended for an additional three years of undergraduate study or until the student receives the degree, whichever occurs first.

Students should be able to:
- Complete the academic requirements of their faculty.
- Meet financial needs.
- Possess a valid Canadian study permit or student visa.
