The main aim of the CGS M program is to enhance research skills and facilitate staff training by assisting students who have demonstrated exceptional academic performance. This financial assistance enables scholars to concentrate more on their academic pursuits and research in their selected disciplines.

This detailed summary of the Canada Graduate Scholarships — Master’s program offers prospective applicants crucial information regarding the program’s purpose, eligibility requirements, application procedures, selection criteria, and the significance of equity and diversity in the Canadian research environment.

Eligibility for Program of Study

An eligible graduate program must incorporate a substantial research element culminating in a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that undergoes merit or expert review at the institutional level as a prerequisite for program completion. Acceptance into the major research component stream must be confirmed prior to holding the award if the program necessitates extra admission.

Joint programs that confer a professional degree (such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/MA, JD/PhD, MBA/PhD, MA/MBA) and clinically oriented academic programs, including clinical psychology, qualify if they incorporate a substantial independent research component, as previously outlined.

Master’s programs that consist solely of coursework are generally ineligible due to the absence of a substantial research component, as previously outlined.

Due to the particular criteria of some disciplines, schools are encouraged to consult the relevant authorities for clarification on program eligibility.

Research domain and topic eligibility

NSERC, CIHR, and SSHRC endorse and facilitate high-caliber research across diverse disciplines, categorized into three overarching fields: health, natural sciences and engineering, and social sciences and humanities. This encompasses research that integrates multiple areas or necessitates the expertise of various fields.
