Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), the foremost university in Brunei Darussalam, is delighted to announce the initiation of the UBD Graduate Research Scholarship (UGRS). Concerning Universiti Brunei Darussalam

Universiti Brunei Darussalam is becoming a prominent institution of higher education in Asia. Established in 1985, it welcomed its inaugural cohort of 176 students. Since that time, UBD has experienced a rise in graduate numbers, the launch of new academic programs, improvements in infrastructure, and the advancement of graduate studies.

The institution relocated to its present site, Tungku Link, in 1995, providing an atmosphere suitable to learning and research. UBD is governed by its four fundamental values: people, expertise, relevance, and leadership. Currently, there exist eight academic faculties, nine research institutions, and six academic service centers encompassing Islamic Studies, Business, Arts, Science, Health Sciences, Asian Studies, Policy Studies, Education, Biodiversity, and Integrated Technologies.

In 2009, UBD launched the GenNEXT Programme, an educational framework tailored for students to thrive based on their individual learning styles. Comprehensive and interdisciplinary, it offers the flexibility and adaptability required for students to thoroughly explore their potential in a practical and responsible manner, while also delivering extensive and rigorous instruction across several fields. The GenNEXT degree guarantees that students graduate from UBD with a superior education tailored to their specific needs and the demands of an ever-evolving global landscape.

Discovery Year program

In 2011, UBD launched the Discovery Year program as a component of the GenNEXT Programme, mandating that all students take a one-year vacation from the institution. This aims to advocate for experiential learning and design-focused education in real-world contexts. Students are permitted to get community-based or foreign experience beyond the UBD campus.

Academic Level

The Universiti Brunei Darussalam Graduate Research Scholarship for Spring 2025 (Fully Funded) is available for Graduate-level research programs at Universiti Brunei Darussalam.

Subjects Offered

The UGRS will prioritize funding for high-impact research that aligns with UBD and Brunei’s strategic research domains, encompassing energy, materials science, biodiversity, data analytics, Asian and Islamic studies, bioinspiration, climate change, herbal medicine, sensor technology, and catalysis, among others.

Scholarship Advantages

  • Tuition, registration, and admission fees at Universiti Brunei Darussalam would be exempted.
  • A monthly subsistence stipend of BND 2,200.00 will be allocated for a duration of 36 months.
  • Complimentary on-campus housing will be provided (excluding administrative charges).
  • Successful candidates living outside Brunei Darussalam will be awarded one round-trip economy-class airfare between their home nation and Brunei Darussalam.
  • Funding of up to BND 3,000.00 is accessible for international research or conference presentations.
  • The scholarship will cover visa fees.

Qualified Nationalities

  • This grant is available to international students of all nations.

Criteria for Eligibility

Candidates must:

  • must not exceed 30 years of age at the time of application (exceptions may be considered on an individual basis)
  • possess a Master’s Degree and at least an Upper Second Class Degree in a pertinent discipline from a globally acknowledged prestigious university, or possess a First Class Degree in a pertinent discipline from a globally acknowledged prestigious institution
    meet UBD’s entrance criteria, including English proficiency
  • Present a comprehensive and influential research proposal

The degree must be conferred within five years from the commencement date of the pertinent academic semester of enrollment (i.e., 1 August or 1 January).
