Study in Australia | University of Wollongong and IPGP France PhD Scholarship 2027

Students who dream of exploring Earth’s deep structure and its link to the evolution of life now have an incredible opportunity. The University of Wollongong in Australia, together with the Institute de Physique du Globe de Paris in France, invites motivated candidates to apply for a fully funded PhD Scholarship for the 2027 intake. The award supports doctoral research across several geological and geophysical subject areas and includes a generous tax-free stipend of 35522 dollars each year.

About the Research Project

This PhD position forms part of an advanced international research program that investigates how the growth of Earth’s inner core shapes the magnetic field and influences the conditions that allowed life to evolve. The candidate joins a team that studies major processes inside Earth using numerical models, geological evidence, and deep Earth simulations. The project allows the researcher to work on questions that sit at the center of Earth science and planetary evolution.

The successful candidate will explore several key themes:

  • Mantle and Core Interaction: Calculate the influence of sinking oceanic plates on heat transfer at the core-mantle boundary
  • Magnetic Field Reversal Behavior: Examine how changing heat flux at the core-mantle boundary affects the frequency of magnetic field reversals
  • Geodynamo Modeling: Build geodynamo simulations and compare outputs with paleomagnetic records from important geological periods

The research uses advanced mantle flow reconstructions and focuses strongly on intervals like the Ediacaran and Cambrian. These periods offer clues about Earth’s earlier magnetic behavior and provide insight into long-term planetary stability.

Eligibility Requirements

Candidates must show strong academic ability, clear research skills, and a deep interest in Earth processes. The program welcomes both domestic and international students who meet the following conditions:

  • A strong academic background in a relevant subject
  • Previous research experience supported by a high-quality thesis at Honours level or Master’s level
  • Understanding of solid Earth systems, fluid dynamics, and numerical or quantitative methods
  • Programming experience, preferably in Python
  • Ability to commit to three and a half years of full-time research
  • This opportunity suits future students as well as those already in the early stage of their PhD programs.

Required Application Documents

Applicants must prepare the following documents before applying:

  • A cover letter of no more than two pages describing research interests and previous experience
  • A complete CV with contact information for at least two academic referees
  • Full academic transcripts

Application Process and Deadlines

Students can apply directly through the University of Wollongong research scholarship portal. The 2027 International Main Round Scholarships remain open for applicants who plan to begin research in Autumn 2027.
