- Medical and Health Sciences (including Neurosciences)

- Structural, Cell, and Molecular Biology
Please note that any combination of these fields, including interdisciplinarity, is permitted.
Advantages of the UNESCO OWSD – Elsevier Foundation Scholarship:
- The recipient will get a cash prize of USD 5,000 and will be provided with a fully-funded trip to an international conference.
- There will be a total of five awards given out: one for Africa, one for the Arab region, one for Asia and the Pacific, one for Latin America and the Caribbean, and an additional honor that is open to any region.
Eligible Nationalities:
The candidate must have resided and been employed for a minimum of 5 out of the previous 15 years in one of the 66 nations listed above, which are scientifically and technologically underdeveloped.
Africa:
- The countries included in the list are Angola, Benin, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Comoros, Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Niger, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
Middle East and North Africa:
- The countries mentioned are Djibouti, Palestine (including the West Bank and Gaza Strip), Sudan, the Syrian Arab Republic, and Yemen.
Asia and the Pacific:
- The countries listed are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Kiribati, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, Solomon Islands, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, Timor-Leste, Tuvalu, and Vanuatu.
Latin America and the Caribbean:
- Bolivia, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Nicaragua, and Paraguay.
Important:
- The requirement of residing in the qualified country for 5 years does not need to be continuous.
- Applicants from any nationality are eligible as long as they meet the residency criteria mentioned above.
- Priority will be given to candidates who have not received The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) or OWSD prizes, scholarships, or grants in the past three years. Kindly be aware that OWSD Early Career Fellows and Alumnae are ineligible for these Awards.
The eligibility criteria for the UNESCO OWSD – Elsevier Foundation Scholarship are as follows:
In order to qualify for an OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Award, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Be a female individual who has successfully obtained a Doctorate degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics field within the previous decade.
- Engage in contemporary scientific research that is in line with the domain of inclusive health.
- Illustrate how their study contributes to the advancement of knowledge in inclusive health and the attainment of SDG3: Good Health and Well-being.
- Ensure that their research is in line with at least one of the specified objective areas of SDG3:
- Addressing the issue of maternal and child mortality
- Fighting against contagious and non-transmissible illnesses
- Enhancing psychological well-being and implementing measures to prevent substance misuse
- Improving measures to ensure safety on roads
- Ensuring widespread availability of sexual and reproductive healthcare for all individuals
- Attaining comprehensive healthcare access for all individuals
- Managing and mitigating environmental health hazards
- Enhancing measures to regulate and restrict the use of tobacco
- Advancing the development of vaccines and medicines for impoverished nations
- Enhancing the allocation of resources for healthcare and strengthening the capability of healthcare professionals Enhancing the ability to detect and respond to health emergencies, as well as reducing the risks associated with them
Please note that applicants are required to explicitly express how their study directly contributes to one or more of the specified priority areas within SDG3.
Not eligible: Applicants whose main area of research is in the social sciences, humanities, or arts.

Who is eligible to apply?
- The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) is actively seeking outstanding female scientists who are making significant contributions in the area of inclusive health.
- Your research should be explicitly linked to the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 3 (SDG3) – Good health and well-being.
- Furthermore, it is a requirement that you have resided and been employed in a specified Science and Technology Lagging Country (STLC) for a minimum duration of 5 years.
Instructions for Application:
Online submission of applications is required, and they must be in English. The following items are necessary:
- Evidence of Residency: Official records that definitively demonstrate your continuous residence in a qualifying STLC for a period of 5 years. Possible choices encompass an official declaration from local authorities, a lease agreement, invoices for utilities, or a contract of employment. This list is not comprehensive, and we encourage the submission of alternative documentation. - Contribution to SDG3: Present compelling evidence showcasing how your research contributes to the attainment of the objective of Good Health and Well-being.
- Justification for Receiving This Award: Compose a persuasive declaration (with a maximum limit of 2500 characters) elucidating why you possess the qualities and qualifications that make you the most suitable applicant. Emphasize the excellence of your research, professional accomplishments, the influence of your work, and any obstacles you have surmounted in your scientific trajectory.
- Required Documents: Please include the following supporting materials: your PhD certificate, curriculum vitae (CV), a comprehensive list of publications, and a minimum of two reference letters authored by experienced scientists who are well-acquainted with your research (preferably on official letterhead).
