Concerning the Asian Development Bank

The Asian Development Bank (ADB) aspires to achieve a prosperous, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable Asia and the Pacific while continuing its initiatives to eliminate extreme poverty in the area. Notwithstanding the region’s numerous achievements, it continues to host a significant proportion of the global impoverished population: 263 million individuals subsisting on less than $1.90 daily and 1.1 billion on under $3.20 daily.

The ADB supports its members and partners through the provision of loans, technical assistance, grants, and equity investments to foster social and economic development.

The ADB enhances the developmental efficacy of its support by engaging in policy debates, offering consulting services, and mobilizing financial resources through cofinancing initiatives that utilize official, commercial, and export credit sources.

It was established in the early 1960s as a financial agency aimed at promoting economic growth and cooperation in one of the world’s most impoverished regions.

A resolution adopted at the inaugural Ministerial Conference on Asian Economic Cooperation, convened by the United Nations Economic Commission for Asia and the Far East in 1963, initiated the realization of that objective.

The capital of the Philippines, Manila, was selected to host the new school, which commenced operations on 19 December 1966. The 31 members convened to serve a primarily agricultural area. Takeshi Watanabe served as the inaugural President of the ADB.

In the 1960s, ADB concentrated its assistance on agricultural productivity and rural development.
