Sri Lanka Introduces On-Arrival Temporary Driving Licenses for Tourists

Tourists arriving in Sri Lanka can now obtain a one-month temporary driving license directly at the airport. This new initiative simplifies the process and is perfect for those planning road trips. Just remember, you won’t be able to drive tuk-tuks or heavy vehicles.

As of August 2025, travelers landing in Sri Lanka can take advantage of this convenient option. The temporary driving license is now available for foreign visitors and eligible Sri Lankan returnees at Bandaranaike International Airport.

Airport-Issued Temporary Driving Licenses

Sri Lanka has recently launched a system at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) that allows international travelers to acquire a temporary driving license valid for 30 days. This change streamlines what used to be a more cumbersome process, requiring a visit to a licensing office near Colombo.

This new system makes self-driving easier, especially for those eager to explore the country’s beautiful coastal roads or hill towns. Kamal Amarasinghe, head of the Motor Traffic Department, confirmed that non-dual citizen visitors can apply for the license upon arrival.

What You Can Drive

With this temporary license, you can operate most standard passenger vehicles, including rental cars and vans. However, there are restrictions:

  • You cannot drive heavy vehicles, such as buses and trucks.
  • You are not permitted to operate three-wheeler tuk-tuks, which are classified as commercial vehicles under local law.

How to Obtain a Temporary Driving License in Sri Lanka

Follow these steps at the airport to secure your 30-day temporary driving license:

  • Bring the Right Documents: Ensure you have:
      • A valid foreign driving license (not expired)
      • Your passport with a visa or arrival stamp
      • Note: Learner’s, provisional, or temporary licenses are not accepted. An International Driving Permit (IDP) may help, but it’s not required if your home license is in English or has an official translation.
  • Visit the Licensing Counter: Upon arrival, head to the Motor Traffic Department counter at the airport. Officials will verify your documents and issue the temporary license immediately.
  • Pay the Fee: There’s a small processing fee, expected to range from LKR 2,000 to LKR 5,000 (approximately USD 6 to 15). The cost varies based on the duration:
      • 1 Month: 2,000 LKR
      • 2 Months: 4,000 LKR
      • 3 Months: 6,000 LKR
      • 4 Months: 8,000 LKR
      • 5 Months: 10,000 LKR
  • Hit the Road: Your license is valid for 30 days from the issue date. There’s no need for additional office visits.

Why This Matters

Sri Lanka is best explored by road. From stunning coastal drives to winding mountain routes, having your vehicle provides access to parts of the island that are hard to reach by train or bus. Previously, travelers had to visit the Department of Motor Traffic’s office in Colombo for driving approval, which could be inconvenient. This new airport process eliminates that hassle.

It’s a small change, but it significantly enhances the experience for road trip enthusiasts.

Final Tip

Driving in Sri Lanka can be unpredictable, especially if you’re accustomed to Western road systems. Traffic flows on the left side, tuk-tuks and buses are everywhere, and honking is a common communication method.

For confident drivers eager to explore, this new temporary license issued at the airport makes traveling much more convenient. Enjoy your adventures in Sri Lanka!
