SpaceX invites university and graduate students to apply for its year-round Intern Program, offering hands-on experience across engineering, software, and business operations. Unlike traditional internships focused on observation, SpaceX gives interns substantial responsibility on real projects supporting space exploration and the company’s mission to make humanity multiplanetary.
What the Program Offers
Selected interns work alongside full-time employees on challenging assignments spanning design, development, testing, manufacturing, analysis, research, and business coordination. Opportunities exist across multiple engineering functions, software development, and business operations, demonstrating that students from non-engineering disciplines can also contribute meaningfully.
SpaceX pays its interns and graduate engineers, distinguishing this program from unpaid internships. Internships and graduate engineer positions may also satisfy university course credit at the student’s institution’s discretion.
Eligibility Requirements
The program targets students currently enrolled at four-year accredited universities. Business operations and software candidates may also be enrolled in graduate programs by the start of employment. Graduate engineer positions require completion of a bachelor’s degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics, plus enrollment in a graduate program.
SpaceX states no minimum GPA requirement but prefers a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher. Strong candidates demonstrate both academic performance and significant hands-on project experience through university teams, coding projects, research, previous internships, or relevant employment.
Locations and Seasons
Opportunities operate year-round across three seasons: Spring (January–April), Summer (May–August), and Fall (September–December). Interns must commit full-time for a minimum of 12 weeks. Locations include Bastrop, Cape Canaveral, Hawthorne, Irvine, McGregor, Redmond, Starbase, Sunnyvale, Vandenberg, Washington DC, Bloomfield, Long Beach, and Woodinville. Site availability varies by season.
Eligibility Considerations
SpaceX works with technologies subject to U.S. export regulations. Applicants must satisfy ITAR requirements by being U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, protected individuals, or eligible to obtain required State Department authorizations. SpaceX does not provide employment sponsorship for students holding F-1 visa status.
