About the University Merit Program at the UNU
In order to fully realize the promise of comprehensive innovation for sustainable development, UNU-MERIT, the UN’s institute for comprehensive innovation, mobilizes knowledge, education, and policy.
Maastricht University and the United Nations University interact closely at the Maastricht Economic and Social Research Institute on Innovation and Technology (UNU-MERIT), an institute of the UNU dedicated to research and teaching.
In order to fully realize the promise of innovation for attaining inclusive sustainable development, UNU-MERIT seeks to drive knowledge mobilization, educate, and advance societal policy and innovation research. Comprehensive Innovation for Sustainable Development (CI4SD) is the subject of UNU-MERIT’s research agenda. It addresses the interrelated risks and opportunities of innovation in relation to digital transformation, migration and population, poverty and inequality, climate change, and the future of employment.
By concentrating on the economics, governance, and public policy of innovation, specialized units serve to further strengthen our current research program. Additionally, UNU-MERIT consists of a Graduate School that works with about 80 PhD candidates (full- and part-time), over 100 Master’s students, and a large number of people who attend our capacity-building courses, which are conducted both on campus and globally.
Research Funding
UNU-MERIT promotes educational access in two ways: first, by providing a range of short courses and higher education programs in many sectors; and second, by providing financial assistance to individuals who cannot afford to enroll in these programs.
In an effort to increase accessibility, UNU-MERIT has established the MPP Scholarship Fund, which is intended to provide financial aid to students enrolled in the Master of Science in Public Policy and Human Development program, a double degree program that is jointly offered with Maastricht University (MPP).
Through the Scholarship Fund, people connected to and collaborating closely with UNU-MERIT as well as other interested parties can make investments in the future of public policy education and ensure that education is accessible to all.
The MPP Scholarship Fund is providing financing alternatives for prospective students, which are shown below.
The Scholarship MPP
Masters of Science in Human Development and Public Policy with Full Scholarship
Known by its colloquial name, the “MPP Scholarship,” this award enables non-EU fellows who have been denied the chance to study abroad because of financial limitations to attend the MPP.
In addition to joining a diverse and driven team of students and instructors, the beneficiaries will have the chance to get training in public policy and human development and become change agents for the greater welfare of society.
The Postgraduate Institute
For professionals, PhD candidates, and master’s students, the UNU-MERIT Graduate School provides excellent instruction and training. Securing educational excellence is the goal of the UNU-MERIT Graduate School. Its goal is to become a preeminent graduate school with a social science focus, providing interdisciplinary degrees and non-degree programs.
The course material emphasizes the role that innovation and social policies play in attaining sustainable and inclusive development. Employability scores for our alumni are high due to the program’s foundation of professional experience and rigorous academics. Outreach for research is intimately tied to education. Our knowledge for development is produced through research.
Our instructional program benefits from this understanding. The degree program aims to equip future scholars and policy leaders with robust analytical abilities to support evidence-based public policies for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable societies through a holistic innovation for sustainable development lens. Our goal is to encourage professionals to learn new skills or keep up-to-date on existing expertise, and the non-degree program helps us achieve this goal.
Overall, in the upcoming years, the GS hopes to accomplish the following objectives:
- Empower research and education to work together;
- Create a plan for the GS’s expansion that includes the optimum student and program count;
- Evaluate the institute’s personnel’s ability to teach and create an HR plan for instruction;
- Evaluate how well-equipped the educational programs’ administrative personnel are.
- Define the partnership between GSX and SBE’s Education Institute;
- Encourage our graduates to participate in research, teaching, and other endeavors by creating a robust alumni network for them.
- Regarding the goals and objectives of UNU-MERIT, the UNU-MERIT Graduate School provides professional and practitioner capacity-building programs in addition to Master of Science and PhD degrees.
- Nestled within the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics (SBE), the Graduate School is a component of the Institute for Societal Policy and Innovation Research (INSPIRE). Under his direction, the Graduate School Head operates.
