The Electoral Commission of Ghana has blamed its inability to declare the 2020 Parliamentary and Presidential elections results within a target 24 hours after the December 7 polls on rains that occurred in parts of the country.
According to the commission, the rains made it impossible for results from polling stations where it rained to be transported to the collation centers for onward transmission.
The commission had planned to release the results at 5pm on December 8 at the Accra International Conference Centre, but was postponed indefinitely because it hadn’t received all the results.
The commission, in a Wednesday dawn presser addressed by the chair, Jean Mensa, expressed regret that they haven’t been able to declare the results as scheduled.
She however explained that as of the time of the press briefing at 12:45 am, the commission had received results from 14 regions and had certified results from 7 regions.
She’s confident the commission will be able to certify the remaining results as well as receive the rest of the results and to declare the results later Wednesday.
Meanwhile, both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have declared themselves winners of the elections, even before the election management body finishes certifying the results.
