Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must fulfill the following requirements in order to be eligible for the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship for Advanced Scholars from Africa:
- Candidates must be female Africans.
- Applicants must be fluent in either French or English.
- Currently enrolled in a Ph.D., postdoctoral, or early career research project.
- must originate from a West African nation that qualifies.
- Thematic areas that are eligible for research must be chosen.
- Candidates must be adaptable and open to travel. Where possible and legal, travel across West Africa and/or to Canada may be undertaken.

What You Should Know
We are pleased to announce the second and final call for applications for the second cohort, which is slated to begin in 2023–2024, as the first cohort of the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship for Advanced Scholars from West Africa (QES-AS-WA) at Carleton University comes to a close. The program Wurin ta na yin rubutu – Her own room to Write, which is open to West African women finishing their PhD programs, postdoctoral researchers, and early career academics associated with institutions, continues until October 2024. It allows participants to engage in a research acceleration experience.
Program Information
The Queen Elizabeth Scholarship – Advanced Scholars West Africa program supports and funds Wurin ta na yin rubutu, which focuses on Sustainable Development Goal 5 (gender equality) and (gender equality) as a crosscutting or mainstream goal in one or more of the following areas: climate resilience and sustainable food systems, education and innovation systems, ethics in development research, health equity, inclusive governance, and sustainability
Universities Canada makes a contribution to the Carleton University program, which also receives financing from the International Research Development Centre (IDRC) via the Rideau Hall Foundation. Scholars from Ghana, Nigeria, and Cameroon made up the first batch. On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, applications must be submitted online through the program website.
This program is intended to give participants the chance to improve their research capacity while spending between 35 and 180 days—two-thirds of which are spent on campus at Carleton University—under the guidance of a Carleton faculty member. Through placement with NGO partners who have offices in Canada and/or West and Central Africa, one-third of the time will be devoted to gaining experience conducting field research.
The fellowship offers leadership opportunities, focused seminars, research supervision, experiential learning through a research proposal that fits with the research objectives of the placement options (see Placement Partners), and network building.
Concerning the Scholarship Award
This subsequent round of prizes will take place between April and October 2024, subject to the recipients obtaining visas. The two award lengths available to scholars are short-term awards (35–60 days) and mid-term awards (61–180 days). Scholarship money covers mobility, accommodation, research placement, travel, and health insurance. Postdoctoral fellows/researchers and early career Ph.D. scholars must work or study in West Africa.
Successful applicants will receive access to the Carleton Library’s resources as part of the award. The scholars are required to take part in workshops that will improve their writing, publishing, data analysis, and grant application skills.
The numerous presentations and lectures given by the Institute of African Studies (IAS), other departments, and neighborhood partners, as well as the scholars’ collaboration on research projects with their mentors, will also be advantageous to them.
Requirements
When the research is over, the QE Scholar will be required to impart what they have learned to their home institution and community. They must also submit a Scholar Narrative Report and register with Universities Canada to join the QES-AS network. The institutional digital library of the IDRC will also include publications that come from the QES-AS. Additionally, scholars would be expected to maintain contact with one another and help develop a network of QE scholars.
Each fellowship requires the recipient to spend 30% of their time researching partner organizations to gain experience utilizing their research abilities. The best candidates may show that their research is related to their mentors’ and placement partners’ fields of study and the IDRC’s.
All applicants must be native speakers of either French or English. English is used in the majority of placements. There are some options for mentorship and placements in French, nevertheless.
Faculty from Carleton who are serving as mentors for this scholarship are experts in a variety of fields and have access to networks of professionals. By utilizing the existing knowledge and placement relationship, we can thereby meet the research supervision needs of the chosen applicants. The candidates must provide their strongest matches for mentors and placement partners.
