The Opportunity
Pure Earth Ghana is seeking an accomplished and visionary Country Director to lead our national portfolio. Reporting to the Regional Program Director for Africa, you will have full strategic and operational responsibility for our impact, growth, and team in Ghana. Based in Accra, you will represent the organization at the highest levels, influence national policy, and expand our programming to address critical environmental health challenges.
Position Summary
The Country Director holds ultimate accountability for developing and leading all Pure Earth activities in Ghana. You will craft and execute a country strategy aligned with our global mission, ensuring program quality, stakeholder accountability, and significant impact. Success demands exemplary leadership, exceptional communication skills, and a proven ability to build partnerships, diversify funding, and manage high-performing teams. You will drive the organization’s reputation as a key leader in the toxic pollution space.
Key Responsibilities
Your leadership will span strategy, operations, partnerships, and team development:
Strategy, Program Quality & Growth:
- Develop and implement a dynamic country strategy that contextualizes global objectives.
- Drive program quality and impact through rigorous assessment, design, and learning systems.
- Cultivate relationships with donors and partners to secure funding and position Pure Earth as a partner of choice.
- Identify and pursue strategic opportunities for program expansion and growth.
Team Leadership & Development:
- Provide strategic oversight for all country operations, including HR, compliance, and organizational development.
- Direct talent strategy, ensuring staff performance, compensation, and legal adherence align with goals and local laws.
- Mentor and build the capacity of a high-performing national team.
Financial, Operational & Risk Management:
- Ensure strict fiscal accountability, budget compliance, and successful project delivery.
- Strengthen operational practices based on global policies and local context.
- Proactively identify and manage programmatic and safety risks.
Representation, Influence & Partnership:
- Raise Pure Earth’s profile through strategic engagement with government, media, donors, and NGOs.
- Build and sustain strong partnerships with local organizations and international stakeholders.
- Contribute to thought leadership through peer-reviewed articles and public discourse.
Monitoring & Evaluation:
- Support robust M&E frameworks to assess effectiveness and guide data-driven decision-making.
- Foster a culture of learning and adaptation within the team.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting to donors and stakeholders.
Required Skills & Experience
- At least 10-15 years of progressive leadership experience, including substantial Country Director-level responsibility.
- An advanced degree (Master’s or PhD preferred) in Environmental Science, Public Health, or a related field.
- Demonstrated success in strategic leadership, multi-million-dollar portfolio management, and proposal development.
- Extensive fundraising and representation experience with major international donors.
- Strong team leadership, financial acumen, and partnership-building skills.
- Excellent communication skills in English; additional local languages are an advantage.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Authorized to work in Ghana and willing to travel as needed.
