PhD Visiting Fellowships (VFP) 2027 | Call for Applications
Applications are open for the AfricaLics PhD Visiting Fellowship Programme 2027. This fellowship supports African PhD students researching Innovation and Development. Sida has funded the programme since its 2015 launch. Fellows study for three months at the University of Johannesburg.

About the Fellowship
This programme strengthens research skills among African PhD students in I&D. It increases students’ exposure to international scholars and research networks. Mentors from AfricaLics and Globelics guide fellows throughout the programme. Female applicants and students from low-income countries receive special consideration.
What Fellows Receive
Fellows join online courses on academic writing and literature reviews. They also present papers at up to five seminars, including the PhD Academy. During the study visit, AfricaLics covers flights, accommodation, and a monthly stipend. Mentors pair with each fellow based on their research background. Fellows additionally attend two face-to-face meetings during the fellowship year.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must be enrolled as PhD students at African universities currently. Their research should connect innovation with social, economic, or environmental development. Candidates should ideally complete their first PhD year by December 2026. Applicants must already hold basic funding for their PhD studies elsewhere.
Required Materials
Applicants submit a one-page motivation statement explaining their background and goals. They must also include a PhD project outline and current CV. A supervisor’s support letter and a university administration letter are required. Academic certificates and one writing sample complete the application package.
