POSITION: Mine Operations Shift Supervisor

About This Role: 

To coordinate and give shift directions to the operators on the operational activities of the mine crew in the open pit area in a safe way, as well as to coordinate resource allocations so that the activities can be done well.

In This Role You Will:

Mine Operations Planning and Operational Execution:

  • Watch over the transition to putting mine plans into action every day.
  • Put in short interval controls, based on the mine plan, and make any necessary adjustments and changes to the shift, to meet daily target projections.
  • Install physical critical controls, like flags and cones, and make sure they are all in place before, during, and after the shift.
  • Coordinate and pair operators with the relevant equipment required to execute tasks.
  • Operators should be given jobs to do.
  • Check dump sites often to make sure that the right height windrows are being built and that materials are being sent to the dumps.
  • Hold Operators responsible for the work they do by
    • giving them punishments and helping them take corrective actions.
    • Monitoring the KPI’s of crew members / Operators.
    • Operators were told about the plan and given clear instructions.
    • Putting in place plans for continuous improvement.
    • Taking care of crew changes during hot shifts.
  • Watch over the operators as they load and move materials out of the pit.
  • Watch over the operators as they work on and finish road maintenance.
  • Supervise activities like land reclamation, cleaning walls, building roads, and road maintenance.

Taking care of health and safety:

  • Stick to the internal health and safety rules of Newmont.
  • Take personal responsibility for the health and safety of every worker who works for him or her or who is assigned to him or her.
  • Help Operators with their tasks and make sure they are working safely.
  • Before the shift starts, coordinate the inspection of Mine Operations work hazards to find immediate problems with safety, people, or production.
  • Due to the discovery of a work hazard, go back to the Engineering team to possibly change shift plans for a certain area.
  • Hold safety meetings and safety checks on a regular basis.
  • Lead staff debriefings every day before each shift.
  • Come to meetings and safety checks every month.

Staff Management:

  • Set up a good shift work environment to encourage Operators to be as effective and productive as possible.
  • Do crew assessments to keep an eye on all of your direct reports.
  • Developing the team so that they can do their best.
  • Taking part in performance reviews.
  • Taking part in performance management calibrations for the team.
  • Recommending more/relevant training courses and development actions in line with Newmont’s people development program (s).
  • Retting up training plans for staff.
  • Staff through coaching and mentoring.
  • Putting people in their place for bad behavior or performance.
  • Improving communication with staff by getting feedback, getting in touch, having meetings, and giving briefings regularly.

Additional Responsibilities:

Mine Operations After the Change of Shift:

  • Hand over information about the work to the next shift supervisor.
  • Talk to the Dispatcher about any dangers you see so that the Operators have enough information to keep things running smoothly.
  • Talk to the advanced dispatcher about any shift changes that need to be taken into account.
  • Prepare a shift-end logbook report to list what happened during the shift and include things like breaches and incidents.

Mine Shift Operations Optimisation and Continuous Improvement:

  • Think of ways that Mine Operations activities can keep getting better.
  • Report and escalate to the General Foreman all accidents and incidents that happen during the shift so that they can be looked at right away.

Stakeholder Management and Engagement:

  • Work with Maintenance, Underground, Load and Haul, and Engineering to finish the daily tasks for the Mine Operations shift.
  • Get ideas from other Newmont departments about how to improve the efficiency and productivity of mines.
  • Consult with the Training Department to find out when and where the national workforce will be trained.
  • Make sure that the shift work in Mine Operations meets the legal standards for running the mine.

Your Checklist of Training, Skills, and Experience:

Formal Qualifications (including Professional Registrations):

Bachelor’s degree in mine or civil engineering, geology, or a related field.

Additional Knowledge:

  • Mine Foreman Certificate.
  • Ghana Requirements for First Aid and Blasting Certification.

Experience:

  • At least 5–8 years of experience in a mining environment, of which at least 2–3 years should have been as a shift supervisor.

Technical Skills:

  • Advanced skills in planning, organizing, and setting priorities.
  • You are very good at analyzing and solving problems.
  • Good technical writing and speaking skills, as well as people skills.
  • Good computer skills, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook from Microsoft Office, Microsoft Project, and Ellipse.
  • Good skills at keeping track of and managing information.
  • Good presentation skills.
  • Good at bringing people together and making decisions.
  • Good at negotiating and figuring out how to solve problems.
  • Good skills as a boss.
  • Good skills as a coach or mentor.
  • Ability to find and analyze the needs of an organization.
