New Zealand Launches 10-Year ‘Parent Boost’ Visa to Reunite Families

In an exciting move to enhance family connections and attract global talent, New Zealand has launched the Parent Boost Visitor Visa. This long-term visa allows families to reunite over a span of up to 10 years, creating an opportunity for parents to be close to their children living in New Zealand.

Announced on June 8, 2025, this significant reform is seen as a revolutionary step for many Kiwi citizens and residents. It simplifies the process for those wanting to bring their parents to New Zealand, avoiding the complexities of traditional residency pathways.

Overview: Parent Boost Visitor Visa

The Parent Boost Visa enables parents of New Zealand citizens and residents to visit for up to 5 years at a time. They can renew their stay for an additional 5 years, as long as they continue to meet eligibility criteria. Although it is not a residency visa, this unique visitor permit supports family ties without placing a strain on public services.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for the Parent Boost Visa, parents must meet the following requirements:

  • Sponsorship: Be sponsored by their biological or adoptive child who is a New Zealand citizen or resident.
  • Health and Character: Maintain good health and character.
  • Health Insurance: Hold comprehensive private health insurance during their stay.
Health insurance must cover:
  • Emergency care (minimum NZD 250,000/year).
  • Cancer treatment (minimum NZD 100,000/year).
  • Repatriation and return of remains.

Parents must undergo two health checks: one during the application process and another in Year 3, to be completed outside of New Zealand.

Visa Fees and Levies

The total cost for the Parent Boost Visitor Visa includes the main application fee, a tourism levy, and a health check fee in the third year. The standard visa fee is NZD 3,000, while those eligible under the Pacific fee band will pay NZD 2,450.

All applicants also need to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy of NZD 100. In Year 3, there’s a health check fee of NZD 325 for most applicants, or NZD 240 for those under the Pacific band.

Fee Type Standard Fee Pacific Fee Band
Visa Application Fee NZD 3,000 NZD 2,450
Tourism Levy NZD 100 NZD 100
Third-Year Health Check Fee NZD 325 NZD 240

When Can You Apply for the Parent Boost Visa?

Applications for the Parent Boost Visa will open on September 29, 2025. It’s important to note that this visa does not lead to permanent residency. Those wishing to settle permanently with their families must apply separately under the Parent Category Resident Visa.

In conclusion, the Parent Boost Visitor Visa represents a significant step towards fostering family connections in New Zealand. This initiative not only strengthens bonds but also enhances the nation’s appeal to global talent, paving the way for a more connected future.
