New Zealand Expands eGate Access to 11 More Countries—Check Your Eligibility Now!
Traveling to New Zealand just became easier for many international visitors. The country has expanded its eGate system to 11 additional nations, allowing eligible travelers to bypass immigration lines and enjoy faster border clearance through facial recognition technology.
Improved Border Control Efficiency
On May 26, 2025, New Zealand Customs Service announced the expansion of its automated eGate system to 11 new countries. This update increases the total number of eligible nations to 48, enhancing the immigration experience for global travelers.
What Are eGates and How Do They Work?
eGates are self-service kiosks that utilize facial recognition and biometric technology. They match a passenger’s ePassport photo with their live image, enabling travelers to clear customs without interacting with a border officer. This process reduces wait times and congestion at immigration checkpoints.
eGates are available at the Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and Queenstown international airports.
To use eGates, travelers must:
- Be 10 years or older
- Hold a biometric passport (ePassport)
- Complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) before arrival
Tip: Avoid hats, scarves, or large glasses when using eGates. Your live image must closely resemble your passport photo.
The 11 Newly Eligible Countries
With this latest expansion, eGate access now includes:
- Europe: Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, Vatican City
- Asia: Macao
- Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, United Arab Emirates
This expansion follows a successful trial phase, during which New Zealand Customs tested the biometric compatibility of ePassports from these countries.
A Major Step Toward Faster Border Crossings
Paul Williams, Acting Group Manager of Border Operations at New Zealand Customs, stated that around 70% of travelers are now processed through eGates. He emphasized that these tools, combined with the NZTD, significantly streamline border checks and reduce congestion.
“As we open New Zealand’s eGates to more countries, even more travelers will have the option of a self-service route. We welcome new passport holders and encourage them to try our eGates,” Williams said.
NZTD Mandatory for All Travelers
Since August 2023, all visitors to New Zealand must complete the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD). This digital form collects information about your trip, imported goods, and health status.
How to complete the NZTD:
- Visit travellerdeclaration.govt.nz
- Download the NZTD app from the App Store or Google Play
- As of April 2024, the NZTD will also be required for maritime arrivals.
Conclusion
New Zealand’s decision to expand eGate eligibility highlights its commitment to efficient and secure border processes. By including more countries and enhancing travel options through self-service technologies like eGates and the NZTD, New Zealand continues to lead in smart tourism infrastructure.
Eligible travelers should check their status and take advantage of these streamlined processes for a smoother journey.
