New Points Proposal for Australian Skill Visas: What You Need to Know

The Australian Granton Institute published a fresh draft proposal this week about the 189, 190, and 491 Skill Visas. The Granton Institute, a preeminent think tank, works to influence public policy for the future of Australia. Despite not being final, this idea has generated a lot of media interest and conversation.

Key Changes in the Point System

The suggested point system includes several noteworthy modifications.

  • Age points: those between the ages of 21 and 29 receive the most points, with a sharp decrease after 30.
  • English language ability: Proficient English earns 45 points, whereas superior English awards 90.
  • Education: a bachelor’s degree from another university receives 30 points, a PhD from a top 20 global university receives 60 points, and so on.
  • Work experience: Two years of highly skilled employment could result in fifty points.

Impact on Australian Visas

According to the suggestion, points for regional study and professional year programs in Australia should be eliminated. It also suggests doing away with the 491 and 190 state-sponsored visas. The entire migration landscape, as well as regional education providers, may be greatly impacted by this transformation.

Implications for Trades and Regional Areas

The removal of trade employees from the new point system is one of the most divisive topics. The 300 points needed for skill level three job experience may be almost unachievable for craftsmen without points. This move could lead to a scarcity of vital personnel in Australia

What should you do next?

The plan from the Granton Institute poses issues for foreign students and trade workers even while it seeks to increase Australia’s economic advantage from skilled migration. Stakeholders will be closely monitoring the Department of Home Affairs’ replies and any potential reforms as the conversations progress.

Australia PR Points Calculator 2024: Detailed Guide

Due to its robust economy, high standard of living, and cosmopolitan environment, Australia remains a popular destination for foreign nationals seeking permanent residency. One of the primary paths to obtaining permanent residency in Australia is through the General Skilled Migration Program, which selects applicants based on a points-based system.

This blog will provide a detailed analysis of the Australia PR points calculator for 2024, including information on its components, point computations, and tips for achieving the highest possible score.

What is the Australia PR Points Calculator?

The Australia PR points calculator is used by the Department of Home Affairs to assess an applicant’s eligibility for various skilled migration visas. The most often granted visas under this scheme are Subclass 189 Skilled Independent Visa, Subclass 190 Skilled Nominated Visa, and Subclass 491 Skilled Work Regional Provisional Visa.

Every kind of visa has a minimum point requirement that varies based on several factors, including age, education, work experience, proficiency in the English language, and more. In 2024, invitations to apply are extended to people with higher marks; however, 65 points is often the minimum required.

Components of the Points Calculator

The Australia points calculator’s key elements are as follows:

1. Age

Age is a major factor in the points calculator, where candidates are awarded points based on their age at invitation. The following age groups earn points: 18 to 24 receive 25 points; 25 to 32 receive 30 points; 33 to 39 receive 25 points; 40 to 44 receive 15 points; and 45 to 49 receive zero points.

2. English-language proficiency

English language proficiency is assessed with exams such as the PTE Academic, IELTS, and TOEFL IBT. If you score well on the IELTS 8 or similar, you get 20 points; if you score well on the IELTS 7 or similar, you get 10 points; if you score well on the IELTS 6 or equal, you earn zero points.

3. Skilled Employment Experience

When skilled work is done in an occupation that is listed on the relevant skilled occupation list, points are awarded for work done both inside and outside of Australia. For work experience gained outside of Australia, you are awarded zero points for less than three years, five points for three to four years, ten points for five to seven years, and fifteen points for ten years or more.

Conversely, applicants from Australia who have experience are awarded zero points for less than a year, five points for one to two years, ten points for three to four years, fifteen points for five to seven years, and twenty points for eight to ten years.

4. Educational Qualifications

Points are awarded to candidates according to the highest level of education they have completed. A master’s or bachelor’s degree is worth fifteen points, a trade qualification or Australian certificate is worth ten, and a PhD is worth twenty points. For the applicant’s chosen skilled vocation, honors or certifications recognized by the relevant assessing Authority are worth ten points.

Candidates who completed their education in Australia may receive an additional five points, and those who reside and study in regional Australia may receive an additional five points.

5. Partner Skills and Nomination

Ten points are awarded to an unmarried applicant. However, the applicant’s spouse may obtain an additional five points for their English proficiency and up to ten points for their relevant skills evaluation, provided they meet certain standards. An applicant may receive points if they are nominated by a state or territory government or sponsored by a relative who resides in Regional Australia.

The state or territory government nomination for the Subclass 190 Visa is worth five points, whereas the family sponsorship or state or territory government nomination for the Subclass 491 Visa is worth fifteen points.

Tips to Maximize Your Score

To maximize your Australia PR points in 2024, you can focus on your English and aim for superb English to get a maximum of 20 points. You could also score higher by adding years to your specialized job experience in your preferred line of work.
