Job Summary
The Senior Business Development Manager (SBDM) is responsible for leading CARE Ghana’s strategic resource mobilization (RM) operations. This role entails working with the programming, communication, and finance teams, as well as CARE Member Partners (CMPs) and other stakeholders, to actively engage institutional, private sector, and other donors in Ghana, therefore achieving CARE’s mission, vision, and strategic objectives. The SBDM identifies and tracks donor funding opportunities, organizes and coordinates donor interaction, and manages proposal creation for strategic and large-scale funding (≥ $5 million).
In addition, the SBDM is in charge of developing and implementing a strong RM strategy, as well as related procedures and tools, and is critical in identifying and cultivating cooperation possibilities to optimize collective effect. The ideal applicant is inventive, creative, and well-organized, with the ability to successfully represent CARE’s experience and capability to obtain donor support while also expanding and diversifying the country office portfolio. This role necessitates seamless communication across several departments and with a variety of partners to create high-quality, competitive proposals on time.
The Senior Business Development Manager (SBDM) would report directly to the Head of Programmes/Humanitarian and be based in Accra, Greater Accra Region.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE ROLE
Strategic Resource Mobilization
- Create and implement a thorough RM strategy that aligns with CARE Ghana’s strategic goals.
- Identify and track donor financing prospects in the institutional, private, and other donor landscapes.
- Refresh contextual and donor landscape studies on a regular basis, and advise CO leadership on new opportunities and problems.
- Engage with prospective donors, CMPs, and global fundraising teams to secure funds and support for CARE Ghana’s programmes.
- Maintain the CO’s RM database for the FORT tracking pipeline, win/loss ratios, and other pertinent metrics.
Donor engagement and relationship management
- Organize and organize donor engagement activities in coordination with the Country
- Director, program leadership, CMP fundraising and technical teams, and strategic partners.
- Maintain a database of current and future donors, as well as track engagement activities and outcomes across many departments.
- Oversee the administration of existing donor relationships as well as the cultivation of new donors, while assisting key staff and partners in successfully communicating in response to donor objectives and requirements.
- Collaborate with the CO and the global program, communications, and advocacy teams to ensure that appropriate, targeted papers (capability statements, project briefings, impact reports, teaming agreements, success stories, etc.) are created and updated on a regular basis in preparation for donor engagement opportunities.
- Ensure that CARE Ghana is represented at donor meetings, forums, and conferences to demonstrate our work and capabilities.
Partnership development
- Working closely with programme leadership, identify, recommend, and cultivate strategic partnerships with a wide range of organizations and networks, including civil society, the private sector, government, and community-based organizations, to position CARE Ghana and increase our chances of winning major funding opportunities.
- Support CO leadership and program teams in developing and nurturing connections with important stakeholders in order to build a network of partners with whom to engage on programmatic objectives.
- Contribute to the CO’s and CARE’s localization / locally driven objectives and commitments by launching programs that increase local organizations’ capacity and positioning to lead and manage significant portions of financed projects.
- Negotiate and establish collaboration agreements, such as Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) and contracts, to ensure mutual benefits and clearly defined roles and duties.
- Facilitate collaboration with partners to create collaborative proposals and initiatives that maximize each organization’s strengths and resources.
Bid coordination and proposal development.
- Manage proposal development from scope to submission for strategic and major funding opportunities (≥ $5M).
- Collaborate with the CARE and partner program, finance, and operations teams to create high-quality, competitive proposals.
- Mobilize and organize technical, writing, costing, and other essential capabilities to help CARE and its partners produce successful bids.
- Track and assess the CO’s proposal development performance, including win/loss rates, process efficiency and effectiveness, partnerships, timeliness, and so on.
Ethical Compliance and Other Duties
- Ensure that all relevant CARE policies and guidelines, such as the safeguarding policy and safeguarding code of conduct, the fraud and corruption prevention and response policy, and so on, are understood and followed by staff and partners.
- Ensure that all communication and public relations initiatives are consistent with organisational and sector-wide ethical standards and principles, such as CARE’s informed consent and ethical storytelling policies, as well as donor laws.
- Monitor relevant trends in the organization and sector, and recommend / execute changes to CO policies, procedures, and practices to increase awareness and compliance.
- Monitor and swiftly handle any ethical concerns or violations in accordance with established processes.
- Act as a spokesperson for CARE Ghana and perform additional activities as directed by the Country Director.
Required Skill or Experience
- Understanding the donor landscape, including institutional and private sector funders, is crucial for international development.
- Development Sector Trends: Understanding current international development trends, challenges, and possibilities.
- Understanding of program design and implementation in the context of development and humanitarian efforts.
- Funding mechanisms: Experience with various funding mechanisms, such as grants, contracts, and cooperation agreements.
- Partnership Models: Learn about various partnership models and how they may be applied in different circumstances.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Understanding of monitoring and evaluation frameworks and procedures for assessing partnership and program effectiveness.
- Financial Acumen: A fundamental understanding of financial management principles as they apply to proposal budgets and donor compliance.
Experience
- A minimum of 5 years’ experience in resource mobilization, business development, or a related function in the international development sector.
- Proven track record of obtaining considerable funding from institutional, private, and other sources.
- Experience developing proposals for large-scale funding opportunities (≥ $5 million).
- Experience managing donor and partner relationships.
- Education Required: At least a bachelor’s degree in international development, business administration, public administration, or a comparable discipline.
- Desirable qualifications include fundraising certification or training in a similar discipline.
