POSITION: Gender Specialist

By using play, which is a vital part of childhood, we help 23 million children each year to stay in school, avoid exploitation, fight against discrimination, protect themselves from diseases, and heal from the effects of war and abuse. RTP is the only global organization focused solely on using play to improve the lives of children facing poverty, conflict, illness, and injustice.

Since we began in Ghana in 2001, we have worked on various programs related to child development, education, protection, health, gender equality, and the wellbeing of girls, all through a play-based approach. We partner with different groups in both civil society and the public sector.

Job Summary

The Gender Specialist reports to the Country Director and is technically managed by the HQ Gender Specialist. This role focuses on improving gender equality in all programs and projects, creating gender-specific programs, building the gender capacity of RTP and its partners, and advising the organization on gender-inclusive practices like hiring and retaining female staff.

Main Responsibilities

Planning and Program Design (30% of time)

  • Conducts thorough analyses on gender issues and needs for programs.
  • Advises the Country Director on gender priorities in planning.
  • Ensures gender perspectives are included in all decisions and policies.
  • Designs gender program strategies and contributes to new proposals that consider gender equality.
  • Leads gender-focused program activities and collaborates with other gender specialists.

Monitoring and Evaluation (25% of time) 

  • Provides advice on monitoring and evaluating the integration of gender equality.
  • Observes the external gender context to suggest program changes as needed.
  • Develops gender-specific progress reports and reviews RTP documents.

Capacity Building (20% of time)  

  •  Assesses and enhances the skills of RTP staff and partners in implementing gender strategies.

Networking and Advocacy (20% of time)

  •  Connects with professionals and organizations focused on gender issues.
  • Supports advocacy with government stakeholders on gender equality.
  • Represents RTP in gender-focused events and coordinates with other organizations.

Other Duties (5% of time)  

  • Completes additional tasks as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education: Master’s degree in gender and development studies or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience: 5 years in program management with at least 3 years focusing on gender programs and analysis, capacity building, and research.
  • Skills: Strong strategic thinking, relationship-building, communication, and technical skills in gender analysis and program development. Experience with international donors is a plus.
  • Language: Must speak and write fluently in English and local languages.
