About this Job

To carry out technical tasks for Newmont by safely and carefully preparing blast holes.

In this job, you will:

Making a Plan for Using Explosives

  • Talk to the Blasting Supervisor and follow their instructions and the charging plan before starting any work.
  • Do field tests to find out how deep the blast hole is and enter the information into dip-plus to figure out how much and what kind of bulk explosive is needed.
  • Check and confirm the amounts of blasting initiation products before getting the Supervisor’s final approval.
  • Do tests on the important systems before using electronic detonators.
  • Get all the blast holes ready.
  • Set up important safety measures. Put up cones and colorful signs before starting the blasting.

Blast Execution 

  • Check all the drill holes and take action to fix any issues before starting the charging process.
  • Put together the starter charges using chosen detonators, fuses, detonating cords, and other supplies.
  • Load explosives by hand into blast holes and/or oversee and guide large explosive trucks to the blasting area to fill the holes.
  • Connect the electrical wires, detonating cords, or fuses to the primer/series, and then link the series to the blasting machines.
  • Connect the surface connectors to the downlines.
  • Follow the partnership plan based on the regular task instructions.
  • Check everything one last time to make sure all blasting connections are safe and done right.
  • Make sure to follow and keep quality checks during blasting work.
  • Handle, keep, and move explosives and their tools following strict safety rules, and always follow Newmont’s safety procedures.
  • Keep track of and update the list of explosives accurately.
  • Gather blasting activity records using the given forms and send them to the Supervisor.

General Execution

  • Plan and organize your tasks every day.
  • Read the instructions or pictures to set up the explosives following the plan.
  • Get the tools and supplies you need to complete tasks from the Supervisor.
  • Make sure that all ongoing work and tasks follow the rules and standards.
  • Help reach blasting goals.
  • Join the regular tool and safety meetings.
  • Join more training to improve your skills.
  • Give the Supervisor a spoken report about what was done today.

Managing and Involving Stakeholders

  • Talk to the Stemming Loader Operators to start the stemming work.
  • Help shot firers connect tie-ups.
  • Talk to the Shot Firer to get permission to start blasting.

Health and Safety Management 

  • Start blocking access to the pit by using a “blasting in progress” sign and setting up barricade cones. Keep the road blocked before and after blasting to ensure the highest safety standards.
  • Check that the marked blast areas are safe to protect the health and safety of workers.
  • Check the blasting area for safety and let people know to leave the blasting zone before starting the blast.
  • Check work areas to make sure they follow Newmont’s rules and outside regulations.
  • Follow safe blasting practices.
  • Always prioritize safety in everything you do.
  • Help your coworkers during work tasks to make sure everyone is following safety rules.
  • Go to safety meetings before starting work every day.

Required Training, Skills, and Experience:

Official Qualifications (including Professional Certifications):

  • You need at least a Senior High School Certificate.

Experience:

  • At least 1 to 2 years of experience in blasting at a big open pit mine.
  • Experience with both electronic and non-electronic ways of blowing things up.

Knowledge

  • Certificate showing you can safely use explosives.
  • Good understanding of different kinds of explosives.
  • Good understanding of blasting tools.
  • Basic skills in using large machines.

Technical Skills:

  • Good at managing risks.
  • Good at staying safe.
  • Good at maths.
  • Good listening skills.
  • Good at focusing.
  • Good skills in planning, organizing, and setting priorities.
