POSITION: Country Sustainability Manager

About the role

Barry Callebaut, the world’s largest cocoa and chocolate manufacturer, is looking for a national Sustainability Manager in Ghana to oversee the implementation of our sustainability strategy (Forever Chocolate) in the nation.

Forever Chocolate aims to standardize sustainable chocolate. We set four ambitious aims to address the biggest chocolate production chain environmental issues:

500,000 cocoa producers from our supply chain will be out of poverty by 2025. We will involve key stakeholders in a transformative cocoa farming plan that generates a living by 2030.

We will also resolve any child labor issues in our supply chain with Human Rights Due Diligence by 2025. We’ll empower our farming communities to protect children’s rights by 2030.

Additionally, we will be forest-positive by 2025. Per global efforts to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, we will decarbonize our footprint by 2030. Our company will be net-zero by 2050.

All of our products will contain 100% certified or confirmed cocoa and farm-traceable ingredients by 2030.

To achieve these sustainability goals in Ghana, we need an experienced and dedicated Country Sustainability Manager. This position will oversee Barry Callebaut’s in-country sustainability efforts and ensure they follow our Global Sustainability Strategy. Nyonkopa Cocoa Buying Ltd., Barry Callebaut’s Licensed Buying Company in Ghana, houses the post, which reports to the Managing Director.

As a leader in our organization, you will develop sustainable strategies and manage operations, people, finances, and stakeholder involvement. This includes full profit and loss responsibility, people and performance management, client and stakeholder relationship management, measurement and evaluation, and any other operations. This job will help make sustainable chocolate the norm by strengthening cocoa-producing communities, achieving environmental goals, and encouraging responsible cocoa practice.s.

Key Responsibilities

Strategy implementation and profit-and-loss management

  • Program delivery: lead and implement field programs, including certification and sustainability activities, to ensure high-quality and timely outputs.
  • Budget and cost efficiency: Manage budget planning and cost optimization for all sustainability operations to provide the best value for money.
  • Operations excellence entails maintaining efficient and effective operations while aligning activities with corporate standards.

People and performance management

  • Lead by example and promote Barry Callebaut’s ideals.
  • Build, coach, and empower a diverse team while cultivating an inclusive, high-performance culture.
  • Support training and development to create a resilient, skilled, and self-sustaining team.
  • People management: setting and evaluating clear performance targets, supporting professional growth and learning opportunities, therefore aligning responsibilities with company goals and individual aspirations.

Customer and (internal/external) stakeholder management

  • Program Design: contribute to customer proposals and program design in accordance with global and regional teams.
  • Client interaction: arrange client visits and explain the impact of our field efforts to improve engagement and support.
  • External representation: serve as Barry Callebaut/Nyonkopa’s representative in sustainability discussions and maintain open communication with all stakeholders to ensure transparency and mutual understanding.
  • Collaboration: work with both internal and external stakeholders, such as Sourcing, M&E, customers, partners, government bodies, and local authorities, to promote our sustainable goals.
  • Stakeholder engagement: be the contact point for engagement with relevant local authorities, civil society, partners, government, and other research organizations (COCOBOD, Forestry Commission, Forest Research Institute of Ghana, Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana) towards the goal of the Forever Chocolate pillars.

Monitoring, Evaluation, Reporting, and Knowledge Sharing

  • M&E: Create efficient and robust Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems to track program outcomes and share data with internal and external partners.
  • Data management: Ensure the accuracy of data and provide regular reporting to stakeholders.
  • Contribute to a learning culture by actively sharing insights with Barry Callebaut’s regional and global teams.

Innovation and Continuous Improvement (Barry Callebaut Excellence).

  • Continuous improvement: discover opportunities for improvement and innovation in our sustainability activities.
  • Strategy and program design: use “field insights” to assess the success of program design and change techniques as appropriate; question strategy on feasibility and relevance in collaboration with regional and global teams.
  • Innovation: promote projects that produce sustainable innovation and impact in the cocoa business.

About You

  • Master’s degree in important fields like agronomy, development economics, and environmental science.
  • Exceptional project management skills and the capacity to organize interrelated activity streams across big groups.
  • Requirements include 8–10 years of managerial or team management expertise in agronomy, agriculture, sustainability, program management, budgeting, cost leadership, cocoa certification schemes, and global and local legislation.
  • Facilitating community development, understanding national cocoa industry dynamics and culture, and implementing farm service delivery strategies.
  • Responsibilities include leading field teams, reporting, and managing client relationships.
  • Experience conducting field-level activities in rural areas.
  • Strategic thinker, proficient in risk management, with the ability to present complex information in understandable words
  • Strong analytical skills, capable of transforming difficult technical material into actionable insights for non-technical audiences.
  • Excellent verbal and writing abilities for clear, engaging communication with a diverse spectrum of stakeholders.
  • Capability to work effectively in multicultural, multidisciplinary teams and develop solid relationships.
  • Capability to lead with empathy, establish trust, and create an open environment for criticism and growth
  • Entrepreneurial, with a strong feeling of service to farmers and farming communities, and showed talent in company development.
  • Strong leadership abilities with an inclusive, supportive leadership style and a commitment to team development and capacity growth.
  • Competent use of MS Office applications such as Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Willing to go to rural locations for up to half the time.
