Background:
WACREN, in collaboration with the European Commission through the AfricaConnect3 initiative, aims to improve research, education, and innovation in Africa by developing National Research and Education Networks (NRENs). As part of these efforts, WACREN leads the LIBSENSE initiative, a continent-wide program that promotes open science customized to the African environment.
Expanding on these goals, WACREN has collaborated with EIFL (Electronic Information for Libraries) and AJOL (African Journals Online) on a three-year project, funded by Wellcome, to improve the quality and sustainability of diamond open access (OA) publishing across Africa. Diamond OA is a scholarly publishing model that charges no fees to authors or readers, and its use is growing in Africa as part of a larger push to line with the UNESCO Recommendation on Open Science.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Community Engagement and Nurturing: Engage and nurture the AfricaConnect and LIBSENSE research, education, and stakeholder communities.
- Strategy Development: Create and implement strategies to encourage open science methods and community participation.
- Event Management: Plan webinars, workshops, and community events to promote knowledge exchange and cooperation.
- Input Collection: Collect and assess community input to inform ongoing project development and improvement.
- Communication Management: Establish and maintain communication channels, such as newsletters, social media, and forums, to keep the community informed and involved.
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Work with internal teams to match community activities to project goals and objectives.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant discipline (such as communications, social sciences, or education).
- Proven expertise in community management, outreach, or engagement, ideally in research or education settings.
- A solid understanding of open science ideas and methods.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with the ability to engage a wide range of audiences.
- Experience organizing events and managing online communities.
- Proficiency with social media and digital communication technologies.
