New Employment Opportunity At Pact

The “Promoting Mercury-Free Mining Ghana Project” (or “Pro-MFM”) is a three-year (2021-2023) U.S. Department of State-funded project being implemented by Pact and Solidaridad.

The project aims to reduce the use of mercury in Ghana’s artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) sector through education, introduction of better technology, strengthened equipment supply chains and demonstrating business incentives for mercury-free gold production.

Led by Pact, with its partner Solidaridad (international NGO with expertise in supporting development of Ghana’s ASGM sector), Pro-MFM has three pillars: (i) technical support for mercury abatement; (ii) increased transparency and resiliency for the ASGM sector; and (iii) incentivizing responsible ASGM supply chains.

The primary beneficiaries are miners, local ASGM investors, as well as gold traders who are interested to adopt mercury-free processing methods and business models.

Pro-MFM focuses on demonstrating the business case for ASGM operators to adopt mercury-free processing technologies.

For the mercury-free processing technology to be widely adopted, it will need to be adapted to the local context and enable miners to process their ore safely and effectively, while avoiding exposure to mercury fumes.

To ensure that alternative processing technologies are appropriate for the Ghanaian context, ASGM groups will be supported to conduct assessments of their ore, and ore processing workflows. In partnership with ASGM beneficiaries, ore samples will be tested, including lab-analysis of gold remaining in the tailings.

To support this work, Pact is seeking a Ghanaian Mineral Processing Expert , who will support the Pro-MFM project team.

Summary of Role

Pro-MFM is seeking a part-time Mineral Processing Expert (hereafter ‘Consultant’) to assist with the Pro-MFM project.

The Consultant will be a Ghanaian citizen/resident, or have existing work permit to carry out work in Ghana and will work closely with the project team, reporting to the Pact Project Manager.

The Consultant will have a strong background in mineral processing in the Ghanaian context. The successful candidate will have experience in operating, designing and/or evaluating mineral processing circuits, and have experience with mercury-free processing systems.

The consultant will undertake ore analysis options analysis for processing circuits and develop mine plans for project mines.

In addition, the consultant will support the Project’s activities concerning the procurement of mercury-free processing equipment.

The consultant will be required to provide technical assessment of all aspects of mine site planning, including environmental aspects.

The required work will be mostly field-based, wherein the consultant will be required to assert a level of independence – while engaging directly with ASGM beneficiaries at their mine sites.

The Consultant will be available for immediate start (January 2022) and continue based on the agreed work plan through until December 2022.

  • During and/or following the assessment visits, coordinate sample collection, and running tests on ore samples, including geochemical analysis, and gold recovery tests (to include laboratory tests including gold assay on tailings samples).
  • Present results of test work to the project team in presentation and written (report) format.
  • Based on the results of test work, work with project mines to design and evaluate gold processing systems at their mine site.
  • Evaluate available mercury-free gold processing systems, both locally and globally, and their applicability to the Ghanaian ASGM context.

  2. Final site assessment report for each site including recommended gold processing systems and mine plans for mercury-free equipment installation and processing
  3. Mercury-free equipment installation and technical support
  4. End of project summary report with lessons learned and recommendations for upscaling

  • MSc (minimum) in geological engineering, mining engineering, geo-chemistry, or other related field of geoscience;
  • Minimum 3 years of professional experience in Ghana’s mining industry – able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of mine site assessments, mine planning, ore analysis, mercury-free processing technologies, and environmental management in the context of ASGM;
  • Possesses both theoretical and practical (applied) knowledge on mercury-free mineral processing solutions;
  • Proficiency in English, both in speaking and writing.
