POSITION: Construction Advisor
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) is a public-benefit federal enterprise that operates in over 100 countries worldwide. Our work in Ghana is divided into three main areas: climate and energy, just transition; sustainable economic development, training, and employment; and peaceful and inclusive societies, which focuses on good governance.
Project Brief:
The Resilience Against Climate Change (REACH) project intends to increase climate resilience in 14 districts across the Upper West, North East, and Savannah regions, with a target of 200 communities by 2025. It focuses on building the capacity of 14 Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs); promoting Conservation Agriculture (CA) for long-term adoption in 200 communities; and empowering local government stakeholders to create and implement Community Action Plans (CAPs) that promote participatory planning and improve climate resilience.
Scope of Role:
As a construction professional, you will manage construction projects, arrange site surveys, validate designs and BoQs, assist implementing parties during tenders, and communicate with contractors. You will also work with GIZ internal stakeholders to monitor progress, maintain compliance, manage handovers, and fix weaknesses for smooth execution.
Tasks:
- Supervise construction projects to ensure they comply with designs, specifications, and stakeholder needs.
- Conducting regular site visits throughout the project region.
- Coordinate technical site surveys and ensure that designs, drawings, and quantities are correct before implementation.
- Assist implementers (e.g., NGOs) with tenders by offering guidance and assuring building quality standards.
- Ensure effective communication and relationships with implementers and contractors throughout the execution process.
- Work with GIZ internal parties to prepare relevant documentation for evaluation and approval.
- Track and document project progress for reporting to M&E and management.
- Ensure compliance with GIZ recommendations and national construction codes.
- Handle handovers, rectifications, and smooth transitions for users.
- Take on extra tasks as needed and necessary.
Qualifications & Experience
- A master’s degree in engineering or architecture with a concentration in construction, civil engineering, or a similar field.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in engineering or construction, with a minimum of 2 years on-site.
- Construction management or supervision.
- Familiarity with local building rules, safety requirements, and intern organization guidelines (for example, GIZ).
- Proven ability to organize different stakeholders and establish and maintain strong relationships with private
- Companies and government employees.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly MS Team, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong command of English, both spoken and written.
- Demonstrated ability to operate independently and efficiently under pressure and against tight deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
