POSITION: Communications Specialist (Afrobarometer Communications Coordinator, Anglophone West and North Africa)

Key Responsibilities and Duties

Guiding Afrobarometer’s National Partners (country-based collaborators) in Anglophone West and North Africa regarding their communication needs. 
  • Revises publications according to statistical assessments of survey findings from National Partners.
  • Assists National Partners in organizing and managing their outreach initiatives.
  • Facilitates National Partner presentations, events, media interviews, and initiatives.
  • Collaborates with National Partners to enhance their communication abilities, create dissemination and media strategies, and organize and get ready for dissemination events.
  • Collaborates with the Head of Communications and other team members to train National Partners in communication skills, public speaking, social media use, and related abilities.
Leading the monitoring, application of Afrobarometer data, and the distribution of survey data in Ghana and other nations within CDD-Ghana’s scope in Anglophone West and North Africa. 
  • Gives priority to and participates in regional governance meetings associated with Afrobarometer, organized by NGOs, government entities, donors, and other organizations.
  • Develops and implements outreach and additional initiatives to maintain media coverage for Afrobarometer after the completion of official announcements.
  • Develops and implements project-focused media and NGO outreach/community activities.
  • Employs different software applications to monitor data and generate presentations, charts, graphs, tables, and memoranda.
  • Establishes connections with key figures to involve them as partners and collaborators in Afrobarometer initiatives.

Communications and media connections 

  • Starts, develops, and sustains connections with journalists and organizations focused on civil society and governance.
  • Covers media channels within the area of authority for news that pertains to Afrobarometer.
  • Collaborates with the Head of Communications and other coordinators to regularly tweet (either directly or via the Digital Portfolio Manager) about dissemination events, relevant conferences, and meetings related to Afrobarometer, and associated events.
  • Report preparations: quarterly, annually, etc. (only for Afrobarometer)
  • Develops and implements outreach initiatives and other projects to continue producing coverage for Afrobarometer after the completion of official dissemination.
  • Guided by the Head of Communications, establishes and sustains connections with journalists and organizations in civil society and governance.
  • Tracks media sources in nations governed by Core Partner jurisdiction for news relevant to Afrobarometer.
  • Collaborates closely with the Communications Team, Publications Manager, Digital Portfolio Manager, Central Management Team, and various partners on worldwide releases for every round.
  • Investigates particular questions or topics related to programs or projects and communicates the findings to the CDD-Ghana project team and the Head of Communications.

Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning

  • Guarantees that all communications-related MEL for Afrobarometer is recorded in Afrobarometer’s Google Workspace Shared Drives and MEL system.
  • Assists in managing dissemination, press announcements, and report schedules.
  • Evaluates the impact of National Partners’ communication efforts to determine the necessity for coaching and additional support.

Management of stakeholders and development of partnerships 

Actively seeks out possibilities for Afrobarometer and its collaborators to:

  • Inserts information into new and ongoing policy discussions by monitoring recent events in partner nations, interacting with pertinent policy figures and media, etc. (for instance, “urgent” topics in supported countries, global/national commemorations, avenues for interaction with key government representatives, media influencers, civil society groups operating in related fields).
  • Establishes and enhances collaborations with stakeholders, policymakers, and prospective donors at local, national, regional, continental, and international levels.

Obligations and roles to Afrobarometer’s Main Partner in English-speaking West and North Africa, (CDD-Ghana) 

  • As part of the CDD-Ghana staff and a member of its Communications Team, offers communications and media relations assistance to CDD-Ghana, as instructed.

Necessary Skills or Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in humanities/social sciences/statistics.
  • Five to eight years of relevant work experience, or a blend of education and experience that would equip the individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Experience in engaging with decision-makers like members of parliament and local government officials.
  • Background in creating and executing national communication strategies.
  • In-depth understanding of media relations tactics
  • Comprehensive understanding of electronic and print media systems.
  • Robust interpersonal and communication abilities, along with proven experience in a multinational setting, are crucial.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication abilities
  • Robust data analysis and presentation
  • Proven ability to consistently enhance understanding and abilities associated with the use of quickly evolving technology.
  • Robust time management abilities
  • Capability to manage several “priority” projects at once, establish and adhere to deadlines, and employ communication skills to guarantee that National Partners and senior leaders do likewise.
  • Should have shown capability to oversee personal tasks independently.
  • Should have established connections with NGOs, advocacy groups, or political parties.
  • Proficient in personal computer usage, including Microsoft Office Suite and G-suite; familiarity with SPSS is preferred but not essential; experience with Final Cut Pro or similar video editing software is beneficial but not mandatory.
  • Some familiarity with and great enthusiasm for Twitter, Facebook, and various social media.
  • Fluent communication in English is necessary; proficiency in French or Portuguese is a significant advantage, though not mandatory.
  • Prepared to travel frequently throughout Anglophone West and North Africa, and occasionally to other regions.
  • Candidates selected for the shortlist will be required to undertake a writing task, a presentation, and a basic math test.

Desirable

  • Citizenship in an African nation
  • Graduate program or qualification in journalism or communications
  • Understanding of survey research
  • Proficient in multiple languages, preferably fluent in or having a working understanding of French, Portuguese, and African languages.

  • Capability to establish a connection with both supervisors and fellow team members.
  • Capability to function autonomously as well as collaboratively within a group.
  • Capability to uphold privacy and confidentiality.
