The December 7 parliamentary election in the Western Region has produced shocking outcomes, as three incumbent Members of Parliament (MPs) with ministerial portfolios have fallen to the axe of their constituents.

The three are Catherine Ablema Afeku, MP for Evalue Gwira and Minister at the office of the Senior Minister, Barbara Oteng Gyasi, incumbent MP for Prestea Huni-Valley and Minister for Creative Arts and Tourism, and Paul Essien, incumbent MP for Jomoro and Deputy Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Catherine Afeku lost to thirty-five year old Kofi Arko Nokoe of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).  There was joy and celebration in the whole of Axim following her loss, signaling that all was not well between the soon-to-be former Minister of State and her constituents.

It will be recalled that Mrs Afeku was given the nod as the NPP parliamentary candidate for the Evalue Gwira Constituency during the party’s parliamentary contest in June, notwithstanding protest from the camp of the other candidate to open the contest to every eligible aspirant to contest the race.

Her main contender, Ogbame Selby, was unfairly disqualified by the regional executives of the party from contesting Afeku in the internal contest.

Young Kofi Arko Nokoe, the newly-elected parliamentary candidate for the NDC, polled 19,820 votes as against Mrs Afeku, who also managed to poll 17,287. Mrs Afeku has not conceded defeat yet, albeit the certification of the result by the EC.

It must be put on record that Afeku managed to win the Evalue Gwira seat in 2016, after the then NDC MP for the area, Kofi Takyi, went independent, contesting the party’s selected parliamentary candidate, thereby paving way for Afeku to be elected as legislator for the constituency. Regrettably, she could not maintain the seat for the party.

For Barbara Oteng Gyasi, MP for Prestea Huni-Valley and Minister for Tourism, her loss was not surprising, considering the fact that the party war waged against galamseyers (illegal miners), and it appeared to be payback time for them to take their pound of flesh.

In the Jomoro Constituency, the loss of Deputy Chieftaincy Minister Paul Essien, a onetime Legislator, was also not surprising. This is because, the signs were clearly written on the wall.
