Mozambique Introduces Mandatory ETA for Visa-Free Travelers from 29 Countries

Are you planning a trip to Mozambique? A new travel regulation has been implemented, so staying informed is important. Mozambique now requires an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for travelers from 29 countries. This new measure aims to enhance security and streamline border entry procedures.

Overview: The Mozambique ETA

The Mozambique ETA is a mandatory online pre-travel registration. It must be completed at least 48 hours before your scheduled departure. This crucial step is now compulsory for legal entry into Mozambique. Let’s explore the essential details you need to know about the Mozambique ETA.

  • Website: Apply through the official portal at www.evisa.gov.mz.
  • Application Requirements: You’ll need your passport information, personal details, and trip specifics.
  • Approval Time: Approvals are typically granted within minutes after submission.
  • Validity: The ETA is valid for three months from the date of approval.
  • Purpose: It serves as a legal entry notification, not a visa.

Fee on Arrival: What You Need to Pay

Even with an approved ETA, travelers must pay an administrative fee upon arrival. The fee is 650 Mozambican Meticais (MZN), roughly €9 or USD 10. Payment can be made in local currency or in accepted foreign currencies. Failure to pay or present an approved ETA may result in denied boarding or entry refusal.

Countries Subject to Mozambique’s ETA Rule

As of April 24, 2025, citizens from these 29 countries must secure an ETA in advance:

  • Belgium
  • Canada
  • China
  • Côte d’Ivoire
  • Denmark
  • Finland
  • France
  • Germany
  • Ghana
  • Indonesia
  • Ireland
  • Israel
  • Italy
  • Japan
  • Netherlands
  • Norway
  • Portugal
  • Russia
  • Saudi Arabia
  • Senegal
  • Singapore
  • South Korea
  • Spain
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland
  • Ukraine
  • United Arab Emirates
  • United Kingdom
  • United States

Essential Documents Required Upon Arrival

Besides the approved ETA, travelers should be prepared to present the following documents:

For Tourists:
  • A passport valid for at least six months.
  • Proof of confirmed accommodation.
  • A return flight ticket.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to cover your stay.
For Business Visitors:
  • An official invitation letter from the Mozambican host organization.
  • A return flight ticket.
  • Financial documents to demonstrate the means to support the visit.

Visa-Free Entry with the New ETA

Since May 1, 2023, tourists and business travelers from these countries have enjoyed visa-free entry. Stays are permitted for up to 30 days, with a possible 30-day extension within the country. The ETA adds a procedural layer to this existing visa-free arrangement.

Plan to Avoid Entry Issues

Mozambique’s authorities are strict regarding this new requirement, so remember: No ETA = No Entry. Therefore, to ensure a smooth journey, take these steps:

  • Apply for your ETA at least 48 hours before your flight.
  • Verify that your passport is valid for at least six months.
  • Keep printed or digital copies of your ETA and all supporting documents.

Final Thoughts

This policy aligns with the global trend toward digital pre-screening of travelers. By streamlining the arrival process, Mozambique aims to enhance safety and predictability. This benefits both tourists and immigration officials alike. So, prepare accordingly and enjoy your trip!
