Trying to define the most spoken language in Africa is quite a task, this is because the continent has over 2000 other languages. Here are some languages that are popularly spoken in Africa.
1 . Firstly, ARABIC
Speaking Arabic in Africa comes as a surprise to many yet it is a semantic language spoken by 280 million native speakers worldwide and 150 million Africans. Arabic is an official language in Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania, Libya, Eritrea, and mostly in the northern part of Africa.
Arabic has its own dialect- there is Modern Standard Arabic and colloquial dialects. Modern Standard Arabic is what will aid you communicate with most speakers in the world, it is also the written form of the language for articles, news reports,s, and novels. Most Arabic speakers learn the language based on the region they find themselves in.
2 . Secondly, SWAHILI
The language is also called Kiswahili. It is a Bantu language spoken widely in the African Great Lakes region. It is made up of a huge swath of Central, Southern, and East Africa. The language is spoken by over 100 million people.
Knowing the language will help you move around countries like Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. SWAHILI is the second most common language in that region. It is an appealing language for many because of its history. The language has retained its essence till today.
3 . HAUSA is another popular language
It is a Chadic branch of the Afro-Asiatic family of languages. It is largely spoken in Nigeria and Niger and other 39 million Africans. The language serves as a lingua franca for most Muslims and it is significant in trade, commerce, and business across Nigeria and other West African countries. Also, it is one of the few that is taught in international universities because of its diverse literature.
4 . Also, AMHARIC
This is the second-largest sematic dialect spoken on the continent after Arabic and is mostly spoken in Ethiopia. More than 22 million natives speak this language. The language is very interesting when spoken, unlike other languages, it has its own alphabets called fidel where each alphabet represents a consonant/vowel combination, but the forms of the consonants and vowels change depending on the combinations. Most of Ethiopia‘s literature is in the Amharic language.
5 . Last but not least, ZULU
Also known as isiZulu is one of South Africa’s most spoken languages. It is spoken by more than 10 million people and it is the second-largest Bantu language. It is written using the Latin alphabet and is influenced by the Khoisan language.
