List of Universities Offering Chemical Engineering in Ghana

November 13th, 2020 at 08:27 am

In this guide, we’ll be looking at the list of universities offering chemical engineering in Ghana. We’ll also look at career opportunities for chemical engineering graduates in Ghana as well as the requirements of becoming a chemical engineer in Ghana.

Chemical engineering has always been one of the core disciplines in the field of engineering. It is a multidisciplinary discipline that combines natural and experimental sciences along with life sciences to design, develop, produce, transform, transport, operate and manage the industrial processes that turn raw materials into valuable products.

Chemical engineers are involved with the designing, developing and production of chemicals, fuels, foods, pharmaceuticals, and biologicals. They are most often employed by large-scale manufacturing plants to maximize productivity and product quality.

This alone has made chemical engineering one of the highest paying engineering specialty in the world. You’ll find a chemical engineer in almost every industry in the country.

What is Chemical Engineering?

Chemical engineering is a multidisciplinary branch of engineering that uses mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology to develop chemical transformations and processes to create useful products and materials that improve society. It is one of the most broadly based engineering disciplines, creating a high demand for chemical engineers across a variety of industries and professions.

Chemical engineers focus on processes and products – they develop and design processes to create products; either focussing on improving existing processes or creating new ones. This means that they are also concerned with managing resources, protecting the environment and health and safety.

Chemical Engineering has the following specializations:

  • Process engineering
  • Biotechnology
  • Transport phenomena
  • Pharmaceutical engineering
  • Petroleum engineering
  • Fluid mechanics
  • Industrial chemistry

What Do Chemical Engineers Do?

Chemical engineers design, create and optimise the systems and equipment used in chemical, industrial, biological, and environmental processes. They produce a range of materials, from fuels and fertilisers to processed foods, beer and wine, polymers and pharmaceuticals.

Chemical engineers typically do the following:

  • Conduct research to develop new and improved manufacturing processes
  • Establish safety procedures for those working with dangerous chemicals
  • Develop processes for separating components of liquids and gases, or for generating electrical currents, by using controlled chemical processes
  • Design and plan the layout of equipment
  • Conduct tests and monitor the performance of processes throughout production
  • Troubleshoot problems with manufacturing processes
  • Evaluate equipment and processes to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations
  • Estimate production costs for management

Job Opportunities for Chemical Engineers

There is a wide range of industries that utilize chemical engineers, including pharmaceutical, energy and information technology. These roles will involve developing existing processes and creating new methods for altering materials.

There are also other sectors and careers which utilize the skills developed in a chemical engineering degree – including quality assurance, manufacturing, and consultancy. Depending on the role there are some risks associated with working as a chemical engineer, as you can be exposed to health or safety hazards handling chemicals and working with plant equipment.
