In this guide, we’ll be looking at the list of universities offering accounting in Ghana. We’ll also look at career opportunities for accounting graduates in Ghana as well as the requirements of becoming an accountant in Ghana.

Accounting is one of the core disciplines in business management. Accountants are trained to examine and analyse financial reports. Accounting is often studied alongside other subjects such as finance, banking or law.

This shows that accountancy is an indiscipline profession which requires students having a grasp of core elements of business practice, as well as the need for effective communication with clients and technical skills such as data input.

In Ghana, accountants study at the university for at least four years. After graduation you can proceed to become a chartered accountant, howbeit after taking the professional accountancy exams.

Who is An Accountant?

An accountant is a skilled personnel who is trained to record business transactions on behalf of an organization, reports on company performance to management, and issues financial statement.

What Does An Accountant Do?

Generally, accountants manage money. They deal with financial reporting, budgeting, pay, purchasing, procurement, and tax. In some companies, they may also audit financial figures.

What Can I Do With an Accounting Degree?

Most people who earn an accounting degree often go on to work as an accountant. There are four basic types of accounting professionals.

  • Public Accountants – These accountants may work for non-profit organizations, for-profit organizations, governments, or individuals. Public accountants typically perform accounting, auditing, and tax work. However, they may also provide advice, consulting, or auditing services to their clients.
  • Management Accountants – Sometimes known as private or cost accountants, management accountants record and analyze financial information for their employers. Management accountants sometimes specialize in a particular area, such as cost accounting, financial analysis, or planning and budgeting.
  • Government Accountants – Government accountants can work for federal, state, or local governments. They often maintain revenue and expenditure records. Those who work for the federal government may serve as agents for the Internal Revenue Service. Jobs are also available in areas of financial management, administration, and budget analysis.
  • Internal Auditors – These specialized accountants examine records for the firms they work for to ferret out waste or fraud. They also review operations for efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness.

Requirements to Study Accounting in Ghana

There are some requirements that applicants must meet before being accepted to study accounting in Ghana.

Applicants are expected to have at least a credit pass in three (3) core subjects: English Language, Mathematics, Integrated Science and/or Social Studies, and three (3) elective subjects in the following groups; Business, General Arts and General Science.

Applicants with A’ Level are expected to have five credits at the O’ Level including English Language and Mathematics, plus three (3) A’ Level or equivalent passes in General Arts, Business and General Science.

HND applicants with Second Class (Lower Division) and above must in addition have credits at WASSCE/SSSCE in three (3) core subjects and three (3) electives
or five (5) credits at O’ level including English language and mathematics. Applicants with HND are placed in either level 200 or 300 after passing an entrance examination/interview.
