POSITION: Nurse (Occupational Health)

Organizational Setting
The FAO Health Services (CSLH) provides preventative medical, counselling, and occupational health services to FAO personnel and their families, as well as health-related advice to the organization. Within the Health Services, the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) unit provides a comprehensive range of services in headquarters and field offices to promote and contribute to a healthy workplace.
The post is with FAO Health Services (CSLH) and is based at the Regional Office for Africa (RAF) in Accra, Ghana.
Main purpose
The Nurse (Occupational Health) provides a wide range of nursing services to employees, including emergency treatment, travel briefing, and other medico-administrative responsibilities. He/she also assists in the implementation of FAO health and wellbeing policies and guidelines in the region, such as health awareness initiatives, the mitigation of specific health hazards, medical evacuation, sick leave, fitness assessment, and other tasks covered by FAO occupational safety and health policies.
Supervision Received and Exercised
The Nurse (Occupational Health) reports to the National Doctor (Occupational Health) and is overseen by the Chief of Health Services at FAO headquarters.
Working Relationships
The Nurse (Occupational Health) maintains a wide range of connections, including employees, doctors, and nurses both inside and outside the Organization, as well as counterparts from other United Nations offices, clinics, and healthcare providers in the region’s Country Offices. He/she assists the National Doctor (Occupational Health) in the execution of FAO healthcare policy.
Key Functions and Results
Clinical Activities:
- Provide emergency medical care during working hours, including dealing with accidents or other emergencies incurred by an employee or guest on FAO’s premises, and be available by phone in the event of an emergency.
- Respond to FAO employees’ inquiries in person or electronically (phone, video chat, email, and other tele-health methods), and refer them to specialized services as needed.
- Support and organize general health status certifications with the Health Services at headquarters for employees undergoing recruitment (‘Entry Medical Clearance’), those requiring periodic review (‘Periodic Medical Clearance’), mission/reassignment clearance, and exit medical clearance.
- Consult the National Doctor (Occupational Health) when the presented problem exceeds the realm of practice/experience.
- Maintain absolute secrecy regarding patients’ medical records (emergency care).
- Maintain an accurate and precise medical record of the patient.
Administrative duties:
- Maintain an up-to-date inventory of diagnostic and medical supplies, equipment, and consumables required for the screening, awareness, and immunization campaigns, as well as defibrillators, first aid kits, and personal protective equipment, in headquarters and field offices.
- Ensure that all equipment and supplies are in working order.
- Supports company actions that align with the company’s Environmental Responsibility Strategy to decrease emissions, boost efficiency, and integrate sustainability.
- Coordinate with focal points and other FAO Divisions/Offices/Centers to ensure that equipment and supplies are in good operating order.
Occupational Health Activities:
- Coordinate the planning of awareness campaigns, training workshops, including in-person and video sessions.
- Provide orientation and referrals to qualified specialists or other qualified hospitals/private clinics as needed.
- Help identify and fix work factors, as well as providing guidance on environmental protection.
- Conduct missions to FAO Decentralized Offices in the region for occupational health and safety-related responsibilities.
Impact of Work
The incumbent’s work has an impact on the efficiency, effectiveness, correctness, and timeliness with which the work unit provides services. He/she actively assists the National Doctor (Occupational Health) situated in the Regional Office in the coordination and delivery of planned healthcare services to ensure the unit’s mission is met.
Candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:
Minimum Requirements
- Education: A degree in nursing, public health, or another healthcare profession. Registered to practice nursing in the country of the duty station.
- Experience: Four years of general nursing experience, including at least three years in family practice medicine, the emergency room, and/or the intensive care unit.
- Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is necessary.
- Language: Working knowledge (proficient – level C) of English.
- IT Skills: Familiarity with Microsoft Office products, the Internet, and any occupational health software.
- Residence: General Service. Employees are recruited locally. To be considered for this position, candidates must be natives of the duty station’s country or have an existing visa/work permit and live within commuting distance at the time of application. The term “commuting distance” refers to the distance that employees can commute everyday between their workplace and their home.

Desired Qualifications and Skills
- A demonstrated ability to collect medical data from systems and generate statistics and reports is regarded as a valuable asset.
- Limited knowledge of French (intermediate to level B).
- Knowledge of Corporate Environmental Responsibility.
