Opportunity
Abt Associates is currently seeking a qualified Accountant for the upcoming Resilience in Northern Ghana (RING) II – Systems Strengthening Activity. This Activity focuses on enhancing the ability of all stakeholders to address poor nutrition and weak resilience in northern Ghana. The RING II – Systems Strengthening activity will result in sustained improvements in the delivery of local services to achieve measurable improvements in the nutrition and resilience of an estimated 85,000 reproductive-aged women and children under five years old.
The position will be based in Tamale, Ghana.
Under the supervision of the Director of Finance and Administration, the Accountant oversees and directs all aspects of accounting support for the project.
Key roles and responsibilities include
- Firstly, Assist to develop, manage, and monitor project budgets, accurate financial reports, and projection of funding needs.
- Secondly, Records expenditures, income, and any other related transactions, in the accounting software.
- Thirdly, Prepares payment vouchers and corresponding checks.
- Moreover, Review travel advance, travel expense reports, keep track of travel aging report and follow up with staff on pending advances.
- Additionally, Prepares payroll and other regular payments with due consideration to deductions (for advances, loans, taxes, etc).
- Furthermore, Prepares monthly bank reconciliations.
- More so, Checks petty cash payments and periodically reconciles petty cash balances.
- Thereafter, Prepare Monthly Remove Office Voucher (ROV) documentation and promptly submit to HQ once approved by Senior Management.
- Moreover, Keeps a register of fixed assets and maintains an easy cross reference system of all government property.
- Afterwards, Ensures that the accounting records are up to date at all times, orderly, well kept, and readily available for reference and audit, when required.
- Besides that, Prepares monthly cash requests, and promptly advises action required to cover estimated costs.
- Most importantly, Liaise with the Director of Finance and Administration on all aspects of financial procedures and any issues that may arise.
- Next is, Ensures that government taxes, pension funds and other local statutory requirement are paid on time.
- Last but not least, Ensures that periodic inventory of the fixed assets (property) of the company is conducted.
- Finally, Assists the Director of Finance and Administration in the implementation of the internal financial control system and compliance with corporate and donor policies.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in business administration, finance or other relevant field.
- At least 6 years of professional experience as an accountant.
- At least 2 years of experience managing financial and contractual aspects of large, international development projects, preferably USAID-funded projects.
- Experience managing and supervising junior financial personnel.
- Experience and skills in developing and managing large budgets.
- Demonstrated ability to work well on teams.
- Proficient in relevant computer applications and databases.
- Familiarity with US Government Cost Accounting Standards.
- Strong analytical and computer skills, with an emphasis on budget and financial analysis.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree + Six – Eight years of relevant experience, or Master’s Degree
