POSITION: Head of School Leadership 

The University of Ghana, Legon, announces an opening for the strategic position of Head of the University of Ghana Basic School. We invite applications from highly qualified and visionary educational leaders. The selected candidate will report directly to the University Registrar and the School’s Management Committee.

About the School

Originally founded in 1955, the institution has grown significantly from its initial cohort of 36 pupils. Today, the University Basic School operates three departments: Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High School, serving over 2,000 students. Its mission is to be Ghana’s preferred institution for excellence in basic education, nurturing curious, confident, and principled learners.

The Position and Core Mandate

The Head will provide overarching leadership for the school’s administration, development, and growth as a centre of academic excellence. This role requires strategic initiative to manage a large student body within a competitive educational landscape.

As a self-financing unit, the Head must generate operational income and ensure its prudent management.

The Head is fundamentally responsible for maintaining efficiency, good order, and the general administration of all human, financial, and material resources.

A key duty is implementing initiatives that guarantee learner success in examinations and drive continuous infrastructure improvement.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Academic Leadership and Monitoring

  • Drive effective implementation of the national curriculum across all school levels.
  • Supervise lesson preparation, instructional delivery, and all assessment processes.
  • Lead targeted academic interventions to elevate student learning outcomes.
  • Establish robust systems for monitoring both student and teacher performance.
  • Integrate educational technology to support teaching, learning, and administrative management.

Staff Supervision and Management

  • Provide strategic direction and support to all teaching and non teaching staff.
  • Lead staff mentorship, training, and continuous professional development programmes.
  • Champion the adoption of digital tools to enhance instruction and school administration.
  • Foster a motivated, accountable, and collaborative team culture.

Administration and Institutional Growth

  • Uphold the highest standards of discipline, safety, and school conduct.
  • Utilize digital solutions to streamline administrative tasks and strategic planning.

Qualification and Experience Requirements

  • The successful candidate must possess a very good first degree and a professional qualification in Education, plus a relevant Master’s degree (M.Ed/M.Phil).
  • Have a minimum of 15 years of progressive experience, including at least five years in a senior leadership role such as Head or Deputy Head of School.
  • Alternatively, hold the rank of Assistant Director II or higher within the Ghana Education Service with 15 years of relevant experience.
  • Be a visionary leader capable of building linkages within the University and the wider public.
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal, communication, and managerial skills.
  • Exhibit a results-oriented approach and a very high level of professionalism.

Tenure and Remuneration

This is a four year initial appointment, renewable for a further term, subject to the University’s statutory retirement age. The position offers an attractive salary with comprehensive fringe benefits including a market premium, rent, and responsibility allowances.
