Job Vacancy at The Ghana Community Radio Network (GCRN)
Role: COMMUNITY RADIO ENGAGEMENT ADVISER
The Community Radio Engagement Adviser will be a part of the USAID/Ghana Accelerating Social and Behavior Change (ASBC) Activity’s leadership team, which has many different roles. He or she will be a member of GCRN’s team and will work directly with and report to ASBC’s management. He or she will work out of the ASBC headquarters in Accra at Korle-bu and answer to the ASBC Deputy Chief of Party.
About GCRN?
The Ghana Community Radio Network (GCRN) is a group of Ghanaian community radio and TV shows and projects.GCRN is a non-profit group that wants to promote community-driven growth by using broadcasting as a way to communicate, learn, and get people involved.
To do this, GCRN works closely with its member stations and other partners to make content that is current, interesting, and full of useful information. This content gives voice to and meets the needs of communities, especially the ones that don’t have a voice, all over Ghana.
GCRN is called “on-the-line” because it combines the strengths of “above-the-line” or mass media and “below-the-line” or interpersonal media. It does this by using its unique participatory methods to connect broadcasting with community involvement for good. The last time USAID/Ghana and FH1360Communicate for Health (C4H) worked together, GCRN was also a key partner.
About ASBC?
The Ghana Health Service Health Promotion Division is in charge of the Accelerating Social and Behavior Change (ASBC) Activity. FHI360 is the coordinating partner, and NORSAAC, Savana Signatures, Mullen Lowe Ltd, and GCRN are the other four key partners.
These are the goals of USAID/Ghana ASBC:
- Make it easier for the government of Ghana to lead, coordinate, and manage successful Social and Behavior Change (SBC) programs at the national, regional, and community levels;
- Communities need to demand, find, and put into practice practical ways to remove barriers to healthy behaviors and practices. This will help people change their behavior in areas like family planning (FP), water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), nutrition, maternal and child health (MCH), malaria prevention and treatment, and new infectious diseases in the 17 least developed countries zone of influence (201) areas in northern Ghana.
- The private sector supports the public health goal by promoting healthy behaviors and practices.
Responsibilities:
- Work closely with the ASBC management team, which is led by FH1360, and especially with the advisors sent by the other core partners (NORSAACSavana Signatures and Mullen-Lowe), to make sure that the ASBC Activity is carried out in the most effective way possible.
- Offer full-time technical support for the creation and expansion of SBC programming, with a focus on participatory community radio;
- Help GHS/HPD build their skills and abilities in the areas of
- Participatory community radio can be used in SBC programming:
- Work with the GCRN and the ASBC team to make SBC programming for the ASBC Activity that is based on community radio.
- Coordinate the placement of SBC messages on different platforms, especially community radio stations within GCRN
- Take part in ASBC’s media and risk communication efforts as a whole.
Requirements:
- A master’s degree in communications, media studies, development studies, or a similar field
- At least five years’ experience in the neighborhood.
- Growth or radio broadcasting communication
- A track record of making and running SBC programs or campaigns in underserved areas, especially rural communities that are hard to reach.
- Have a good understanding of how active community radio can help people change for the better, and if possible, some experience with it.
- Good writing skills and experience making reports and plans that can be checked.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work well with a variety of partners
- Experience building up people’s skills and giving training to community radio stations or other similar organizations
- Ability to work both alone and with a group
- Good planning and time-management skills, as well as the ability to work on more than one thing at once.
- It will be helpful to know several local languages, especially those of the north.
