Standard Chartered Bank announces a strategic senior leadership opportunity for the combined role of Head of Audit for Ghana and Senior Audit Manager for Functions. This position sits within the Group Internal Audit (GIA) function, which serves as the independent third line of defence for the Bank. The role holder will provide critical assurance to the Board and Executive Management, ultimately safeguarding the Bank’s assets, reputation, and long-term sustainability.

Core Purpose and Strategic Leadership

This is a pivotal, regulated role requiring approval from the Bank of Ghana. The successful candidate will lead the GIA strategy for the Ghana franchise while simultaneously managing functional audit responsibilities. Consequently, the individual must exhibit the highest levels of professional objectivity, integrity, and ethical judgment as defined by the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) standards.

Principal Duties and Key Responsibilities

The role encompasses comprehensive leadership across audit delivery, strategy, and stakeholder management. Primarily, you will act as a Team Manager, overseeing the end-to-end delivery of high-quality audits that minimize business disruption. You will finalize audit reports and issue management actions, ensuring risks are clearly articulated and mitigated.

Regarding strategy, you will ensure the audit plan dynamically addresses the Group’s key risks, including emerging and systemic threats. Furthermore, you will continuously assess that the Ghana audit plan remains relevant amidst a changing risk landscape and propose necessary adjustments.

A major component involves people leadership and talent development. You will ensure the team is properly resourced, skilled, and highly engaged. Additionally, you will provide coaching, set clear objectives, and promote a culture of diversity and high performance in line with the Bank’s valued behaviours.

You will also manage critical relationships with a wide array of stakeholders. This includes the Ghana Country Management Team, local regulators, external auditors, and Group audit committees. Moreover, you will represent GIA at key governance forums, providing meaningful, data-driven challenges and insight.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

Candidates must possess a first degree and a master’s degree or its equivalent. A professional accounting certification, such as ACCA or ACA, is mandatory.

  • You must have a minimum of 15 years of post-qualification experience.
  • At least 12 of those years must be within the banking industry.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a financial management or accounting function is required.
  • Crucially, you need at least 5 years in a senior position within an audit function.
  • Demonstrable experience with regulatory engagement in the Ghana market is essential.

Required Skills and Personal Attributes

The ideal candidate is a seasoned career auditor or business leader with extensive governance experience. You must possess strong leadership qualities and exceptional interpersonal skills to influence and gain respect at all levels.

  • Exhibit strong analytical skills and a detail-oriented approach to interpreting complex information.
  • Be a confident communicator, both in writing and verbally, with the courage to escalate issues professionally.
  • Demonstrate a strong sense of integrity, independence, and the ability to challenge effectively.
  • Show a deep understanding of the banking product landscape and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Be a self-directed change leader capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Possess the ability to travel internationally as required.
