POSITION: Assistant FAO Representative

This position is situated in the FAO Representation in Accra, Ghana.
Reporting Structures
The Assistant FAO Representative (Programme) answers to the FAO Representative (FAOR) but operates with autonomy and initiative. Utilizing knowledge of local socio-economic conditions, language, and institutions, the incumbent will carry out various normative, operational, and programming functions to support the work of the FAO Representation in agriculture, forestry, fisheries, and rural development.

Program design, coordination, and operational support grounded in an understanding of the local conditions, culture, language, and institutions of the assigned country.
Main Outcomes
Efficient and effective organization and delivery of technical and operational assistance for the program and project activities of the FAO Representation.
Essential Functions
- Coordinates and supports government agencies, as well as local, national, and international organizations, in relation to FAO’s work within the country and alongside other UN bodies. He/she might represent FAO at inter-agency meetings when necessary.
- Enhances the reputation of FAO by advocating for the Organization’s mandate, programs, national priorities, and activities, which include the creation and maintenance of communication tools like the website, press releases, and publications, while also aiding in the execution of FAO’s regulatory framework (Codex Alimentarius, Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries, Safe Use of Pesticides, etc.) within the country.
- Oversees the gathering, unification, and upkeep of national data regarding food, crops, livestock, forestry, and fisheries, including details on external assistance in FAO’s corporate systems, while tracking alterations in national policies impacting the agricultural sector.
- Engages in the creation of technical, economic, and policy studies as needed, and in formulating country-level development frameworks, including the Country Programming Framework (CPF) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF).
- Instructs, guides, and oversees staff at lower grade levels concerning all job facets; guarantees compliance with procedures and job expectations, along with precision and thoroughness in the work delivered.
- Carries out additional tasks as needed.
Minimum Requirements
- Citizens of the assigned country.
- Postgraduate degree in agriculture, agricultural economics, forestry, fisheries, natural resources, rural development, business administration and management, international relations, or any other area pertinent to the Organization’s work.
- Three years of applicable experience in public and/or private sectors linked to programming, planning, and technical collaboration in food and agriculture and/or project execution in a field of FAO’s operations in the country.
- Proficient (level C) working knowledge of English and a local language (Twi/Akan or another local dialect).
