POSITION: National Project Coordinator
The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) contributes to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda through the FAO Strategic Framework by promoting the transformation of agrifood systems to be MORE efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable, resulting in better production, nutrition, the environment, and a better life for all.
UN specialized entity FAO handles international famine relief. Food security for all is the FAO’s goal by providing people with enough high-quality food to live active, healthy lifestyles. The FAO serves approximately 130 countries with 195 members (194 nations plus the EU).
FAO Country Offices, guided by corporate guidance and the Strategic Framework, provide policy advice and support to countries in FAO’s mandated areas through partnerships, resources, and an active country program to provide technical assistance, develop capacities, and deliver core services while adhering to international accountability standards to establish leadership and strengthen impact at the country level.
The offices implement each country’s programmatic priorities as outlined in their Country Programming Frameworks (CPFs), which are aligned with the UNSDCF, and ensure efficient and effective operations with enough staff and funds.
Specifically, FAO Country Offices.
- Advocate, inform and promote policies and investments within the scope of the FAO’s mandate.
- Offer technical support and core services;
- Help and catalyze collaboration and resource mobilization actions to enable agrifood system change
- Position FAO as the specialized/authoritative technical agency in food, agriculture, and agrifood systems transformation; and
- Implement risk-aware and accountable operations and management.
The ILO, FAO, and Cirad worked on the JobAgri project to improve policies and investments in Africa’s agri-food sector based on new labour content data. The program aims to connect agri-food and decent job growth in Africa and provide unique data. JobAgri’s start-up phase in Ghana began in 2024 to improve agriculture and employment statistical and research capacities and facilitate multi-stakeholder and ‘tripartite-plus’ policy debates.
The post is based at the FAO Country Office in Ghana.
Reporting Lines
National Project Coordinator will be directly overseen by FAO Representative and technical supervision by FAO Regional Office for Africa (RAF) Social Policy Officer (Youth Employment) and Decent Rural Employment Team (DRET) Youth Employment Specialist. The incumbent will collaborate with headquarters and regional office staff to implement the project: JobAgri: Using stakeholder involvement, coordination, and research to improve policies and investments in Africa’s agri-food sector, particularly Ghana, based on new labour content data.
Technical Focus
The National Project Coordinator will provide technical support for multistakeholder involvement, policy analysis, dialogues, formulation, and capacity development functions, as well as collaboration with JobAgri project partners.
Tasks and Responsibilities
- Facilitate multi-stakeholder participation, including line ministries, farmer associations, trade unions, and employers’ organizations, by arranging workshops to disseminate new evidence and assist its integration into policy discussions and the policy formation process.
- Organize meetings with existing multi-stakeholder platforms in agriculture (for example, the agriculture sector platform and the United Nations Country Teams) to ensure that this initiative is aligned with national stakeholders in agri-food systems.
- Coordinate a technical workshop with multi-stakeholders on essential FAO guides, tools, and frameworks related to decent work in agriculture, as agreed upon by the multi-stakeholders or as needed.
- Conduct a mapping exercise of national agriculture and employment policies, as well as subnational and sectoral policies, based on a specific region and value chain in Ghana, and generate sections of reports based on the results.
- Participate in project workshops and meetings organized by project partners, and report back to the FAO national, regional, and headquarters offices.
- Provide input for ad hoc research to identify larger policy gaps. If necessary, research a specific topic identified by the multi-stakeholders.
- Facilitate communication among project partners, stakeholders, the FAO national office, regional offices, and headquarters.
- Support the creation of progress reports, final reports, and other technical papers for submission to the ILO.
- Other related duties may be assigned as needed.
Candidates will be assessed against the following criteria:
Minimum requirements
- A graduate degree in economics, agricultural economics, development economics, political science, international relations, international development, or a similar subject.
- 3 years of demonstrated competent and relevant experience in agriculture, multi-stakeholder engagement, policy analysis, and research in rural development or livelihood programs in the context of an NGO, international organization, or UN.
- Working knowledge of English.
- Ghana’s national competencies align with FAO’s core competencies.

Technical/functional skills
- Experienced in multi-stakeholder engagement in Ghana.
- Proven understanding of national agricultural and employment policies, as well as subnational and sectoral policies.
- Demonstrated understanding of important FAO guides, techniques, and frameworks for decent employment in agriculture.
- Demonstrated research and report-writing abilities.
- Outstanding communication and network facilitation skills.
- Experience working with employment challenges and finding decent work in the agri-food value chain.
Selection Criteria:
- Prior experience fostering multistakeholder engagement.
- Experience with policy analysis and its relevance.
- The extent and relevance of experience facilitating technical workshops.
- A high level of communication skills, as well as the ability to create concise technical reports in English, are valuable assets.
