Job Description
- Position: Communications and Media Officer
- Location: EJF office in Cape Coast, Ghana
- Contract: Full-time, permanent
- Salary: Between $15,000 and $20,000 per year depending on experience

They investigate abuses and support those affected, including environmental defenders and independent journalists. EJF campaigns for a peaceful, fair, and sustainable future by tackling illegal fishing and human rights abuses in the fishing industry. Their team includes investigators, researchers, filmmakers, and campaigners who collaborate with community partners worldwide.
Position Overview:
EJF is looking for a skilled Communications and Media Officer who can write well and manage communications effectively. In this role, you will focus on gaining media attention for EJF’s work in Ghana, using various media platforms such as radio, TV, and online. You will design and implement communication strategies guided by the Ghana Fisheries Programme Manager and the international communications team. You won’t be directly involved in investigations but will use their work to create compelling stories.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement communication strategies.
- Create press releases, social media content, web content, and other materials like leaflets and posters.
- Connect with local radio networks and help communities work with journalists.
- Build relationships with journalists to promote EJF’s work and improve media coverage of Ghana’s fishing industry.
- Respond to media inquiries and coordinate journalist training sessions.
- Organize press trips and ensure events run smoothly.
- Promote project films and radio programs in the media.
- Follow donor branding requirements for all communications.
Required Skills and Experience:
Essential Skills:
- Good understanding of news and the ability to explain complex issues to different audiences, including local fishing communities.
- Ability to write inspiring and accurate content for print and online.
- A degree or relevant experience in communications, media, journalism, or public relations.
- Experience in a media team with knowledge of Ghana’s media landscape.
- Existing media contacts are a plus.
- Proven ability to manage projects independently.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Calm, friendly, and tactful under pressure.
- Confident, resilient, and collaborative.
- Passionate about environmental and human rights issues.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience in television or radio, including camera operation and conducting interviews.
- Previous work on environmental or fisheries topics.
