Job Offer at The Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT

Job Title: SCIENTIST – BEHAVIORAL CHANGE

THE ORGANIZATION

The Alliance of Bioversity International and the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) (https://www.bioversityinternational.org) provide research-based solutions that use farming biodiversity to improve food systems and people’s lives. Malnutrition, climate change, the loss of species, and environmental degradation are all problems that affect the whole world.

With the help of new partnerships, the Alliance gathers evidence and spreads new ideas to change food systems and landscapes in ways that are good for people, the world, and the economy.

The Alliance is a part of the CGIAR, which is a global partnership for the study of food security.

The Alliance has six vital parts: 2) Multifunctional landscapes: fostering innovation for environmental health and useful landscapes to improve people’s lives. 3) Climate action to reduce food system risks; 4) Providing and protecting agricultural and tree variety for food system actors. 6) Nutrition and health-focused agricultural growth to address the triple burden of malnutrition. The Alliance’s Multifunctional Landscape and Digital Inclusion Lever scientists will handle this.

About the Project

The Excellence in Agronomy (EiA) Initiative aims to provide agronomic gains for millions of smallholder farming households in prioritized farming systems, with a focus on women and young farmers. This will have a measurable effect on food and nutrition security, income, water use, soil health, and climate resilience. Use Cases in different parts of the Global South are used to plan the work in the EiA Initiative.

Use Cases respond to partner requests for agronomic solutions and focus on developing Minimum Viable Products with a demand partner (public or private) that has an active extension network in a particular target area. EiA’s goal for co-creating agronomy solutions is to make it easier for the user’s viewpoint, needs, and pain points to be taken into account in the design of research-based agronomic innovations. This includes giving the initiative the tools it needs to do user study.

What the job is about

EiA will benefit from this position. Ghana hosts the West and Central Africa job. The job will support EiA Use Case teams conduct user and behavior studies that consider the needs, preferences, and factors that affect different user groups, with a focus on women and other underrepresented groups. This will entail planning and organizing training and tool creation for implementer teams and partners. Thus, the job is to integrate and monitor behavioral science research and treatments in EiA implementation, especially in West and Central Africa but also in other EiA regions if needed. It will join EiA’s behavior change group.

Main tasks and responsibilities

  • Help EiA carry out user and behavior studies to learn about the different needs, preferences, and behavior drivers of different user groups for different solutions, with a focus on gender and other marginalized groups.
  • EiA Teams will co-create and use a set of tools for user study and changing behavior.
  • Help get user and behavior change studies into the protocols of the EiA and keep an eye on it.
  • Be an active part of EiA’s working group on behavior change
  • Work closely with the human-centered and user experience (UX) Design experts in EiA to help teams figure out how to use the results of user and behavior change studies in the product design process.
  • Design and manage training in user and behavior research methods for CGIAR and NARS scientists and partners, especially in West and Central Africa or as needed.
  • Engage with EiA colleagues and teams that have methodological ties to study on user and behavior change to make learning easier.
  • Lead the design of a user and behavior change study database that combines qualitative and quantitative data on the different user groups across use cases and target countries.
  • Do a synthesis of various datasets and help it along.
  • To help the EiA human-centered design and behavior change plan, a strategy and projects will be made.
  • Partnership management and growth

Education, and what’s needed

  • Ph.D. in social sciences (preferably anthropology, psychology, economics, or sociology) or relevant research work in user research, user-experience research, or behavior change research.
  • Strong qualitative research skills and experience with both user and behavior change research and mixed methods research.
  • Experience running classes and other forms of group participation
  • Contributes to the creation and implementation of at least one (1) successful plan. Experience working in the global south, preferably in the agricultural sector.
  • Approaches like Design Thinking, Human-Centered Design, and User-Experience Design
  • Good at talking and working with others
  • Deep understanding of the ongoing national needs and regional priorities of the Western Africa region, as well as how these can be used in this role.
  • Excellent English and French-speaking and negotiating skills. French is a plus.

Conditions of the job

This job will be based in Accra, Ghana, and will be filled by someone from outside the country. The first contract will be for up to two years, with a six-month trial term, and can be extended based on how well the job is done and how many resources are available. This job is at level BG09 on a scale of 14 levels, where level 14 is the highest.
