The Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA) has officially launched the application process for its 2026 Japanese Government Scholarship for Taiwanese Students (Domestic Selection)—a prestigious funding opportunity designed to support Taiwanese citizens currently studying or intending to study at Japanese graduate schools.

This esteemed scholarship offers not only financial support but also an opportunity to foster Taiwan-Japan relations through academic and cultural exchange. As a dedicated and driven Taiwanese student in Japan looking to further my education, this chance might change my academic path!

This scholarship, provided by the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, is aimed at Taiwanese citizens living in Japan who are currently studying or planning to start (in April 2026) graduate programs in Japan, including Master’s, Doctoral, and Professional Degree courses.

Benefits of the JTEA Scholarship

Chosen scholars will be granted:

  • Monthly Allowance:
    • ¥144,000 for Graduate Master’s and Professional Programs
    • ¥145,000 for PhD Programs
    • Extra ¥2,000–¥3,000 for studying in specified regions.
  • Tuition Assistance:
    • Tuition fee reimbursement (subject to budget constraints) after providing proof.
    • Note: Fees for entrance exams and admission are excluded.
  • Return Flight Cost:
    • Single economy class ticket to Taiwan after successful program completion.
    • Only valid for students who return straight to Taiwan after graduation during the scholarship duration.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible, applicants need to:

  • Possess Taiwanese citizenship and live in Japan by October 2025.
  • Be an international student holding a “Student” residence status (留学) registered in:
  • A dedicated graduate program (Master’s, Doctoral, or Professional)
  • OR be currently in your final undergraduate year, a research student, or a non-degree student intending to enroll in a graduate program as a regular student in April 2026.
  • Come into existence on or after April 2, 1991.
  • Be in good physical and mental condition for graduate-level academic studies.
  • Possess a strong desire to enhance Japan-Taiwan relations during and following my studies.
  • Not receiving additional scholarships from the Japanese government or associated organizations.
  • Must not surpass the standard study duration or have altered residence status from “Student.”
  • Do not arrange long-term trips away from Japan for fieldwork or internships commencing April 2026.

Required Documents

Candidates must provide:

  • Filled out the Japanese-language application form and included a photo.
  • Research plan (4,000–6,000 characters, in Japanese or English, comprehensive and precise)
  • Master’s thesis (for doctoral students) or summary.
  • Transcripts (original copies required for undergraduate and graduate)
  • Enrollment certificate and anticipated graduation
  • Letter of acceptance (for individuals starting in April 2026)
  • Letter of recommendation from an overseeing professor
  • Photocopy of passport and up-to-date residency documentation indicating “Student” visa status.
  • Health certificate (issued after April 1, 2025)
  • Envelope with ¥180 postage stamp included.
  • Documents for pledge and checklist signed.

Applications Deadline

The final day to apply for the 2026 Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association Domestic Scholarship is October 24, 2025 (must be postmarked by this date). Applications that are submitted late or are incomplete will not be taken into account. Disclosure of results is through written notice from late February to early March 2026.
