JAIL BREAK IN ABUJA: GHANA IMMIGRATION SERVICE ISSUES RED ALERT
On the 6th of July 2022, which was a Wednesday, there was a jailbreak in Nigeria, specifically at the Kuje Maximum Security Prison in Abuja. As announced by the Ghana Immigration Service, reports indicated that about 443 inmates out of about 879 inmates who escaped as a result of the break are still on the run.
It is suspected that the Jihadist group Boko Haram is behind the attack where high-end explosives and guns were used to free all of 64 linked inmates of Boko Haram at the Prison. These 64 linked inmates of Boko Haram are among the 443 escapees. They were freed by the Boko Haram militant group.
ALERT FROM GHANA IMMIGRATION SERVICE
According to the Ghana Immigration Service, looking at the rate at which Nigerians are migrating within the sub-region, there is a likelihood that most of these escapees will use legal and illegal routes to migrate into Ghana. Mr. Affrifah, the Deputy Director of the Ghana Immigration Service said, “Considering current migration trends within the sub-region, it is likely most of the escapees will attempt to enter Ghana through both approved and unapproved routes.”
An additional statement in the memo stated, “Given the above, I am directed to inform you to Institute stringent measures at all points of entry and intensify patrols to deter and intercept all escapees who will attempt to infiltrate the country”.
IN CONCLUSION
In view of this jailbreak, the Ghana Immigration Service has issued an alert to all regional and sector commanders. It bids these sectors to be vigilant and take note of this to avoid any damage. Media reports also indicate that all these 64 inmates are associated with the Boko Haram militant group, thereby causing the escape of altogether, 443 inmates.
