What is the NIG-INTERN Program?

The National Institute of Genetics (NIG)/Genetics Program at SOKENDAI provides a research internship program for undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking research experience in genetics and associated life sciences. Interns will perform autonomous research under the guidance of a host investigator at NIG.

Our curriculum encompasses instruction in scientific research, scientific communication, and laboratory visits for discussions with individual principle investigators. Upon conclusion of the program, interns will deliver a presentation regarding their experiences at the “NIG-INTERN Reports Symposium.” NIG will provide a certificate to individuals who have successfully completed the program. Interns may also engage in other activities, including graduate program lectures, journal clubs, and seminars conducted by eminent scholars from both within and outside NIG.

NIG will provide round-trip flights from the intern’s domicile (school location) to Japan, round-trip transportation between the airport in Japan and NIG, hotel expenses at the institute’s guesthouse, and travel insurance for the duration of the program. NIG will not cover living and other miscellaneous expenditures; interns are responsible for these fees.

Eligibility Requirements for the NIG Internship Program 2025:

Academic Status: Applicants must be in the penultimate year of their academic program, which encompasses:

• Third year of a four-year bachelor’s program
• Second year of a three-year bachelor’s program
• Fourth year of a five-year curriculum
• First year of a two-year master’s program
• Fifth year of a six-year curriculum
• Applicants must possess a robust interest in life sciences.
• Applications from students who are not in their penultimate year and those enrolled in PhD programs are not permitted due to the program’s competitive character.
• Students intending to pursue a PhD at NIG are urged to submit their applications.

What is the procedure for applying to the NIG Internship Program 2025?

Prior to commencing registration, ensure you possess essential information, including your current postal location, area of interest, and selected host laboratory for your studies. A confirmation email with your application number and password will be dispatched to your email address immediately upon registration. During the initial registration, you are required to provide the names and email addresses of two recommenders. Consult your recommenders prior to registration and request that they compose a recommendation letter on your behalf. Upon registration, the recommenders will receive an email prompting them to submit their recommendations on your behalf.

• Submit Information: Following registration, you will receive a confirmation email containing an application number and password. Utilize this to authenticate and finalize your application.

Announcement of Results 【Late February】

The application numbers of successfully selected students will be published on our website by the conclusion of February 2025. The chosen pupils will receive a notification from us as well.

March to May: Travel Arrangements

Immediately following the publication of results, we will commence organizing flights for successful applicants. Selected students must provide a copy of a valid passport by early March. Ensure the acquisition of a passport by this phase.

June 13 to July 24: Internship period

Invited interns will reside in the NIG Guest House, undertake a research project under the guidance of a host scientist, and engage in other activities. All interns will provide an oral presentation on the designated day at the conclusion of the internship.

Submission of Assignments by the conclusion of July

Submit an essay, a questionnaire, and a stub of the return flight boarding pass or its scanned or photographed copy by July 31, 2025.
